  1. It is a 259 cid V8.  These have been installed in Avantis in the past (not by the factory).  The chrome rocker arm covers and valley cover were offered as an option on V8s.  I believe that the transmission is a Flightomatic, not the Powershift used in Avantis.  If it is cheap enough and you can properly store it, go for it.  It will never be correct for your 1964 Avanti.  I recommend maintaining and rebuilding as necessary, what you have.

The connection between the Rauen brothers and the #28 24 hour Daytona Race Avanti was.........?

    1) Chassis/body work......2) Engine techs......3) Pit crew.......4) Financial help

I believe that there has been some confusion between the two race Avantis that both bore the number 28.  The chassis for the Daytona car was by Ray Dillon and the engine by Bo Laws.  The chassis for the Mid-Ohio car was by Herb Adams.

  3. IMO, it is a parts car unless you just like to do the work yourself.  I base this on a combination of damage & rust vs. final value.

EDIT:  These Monte Carlo based Avantis sometimes had severe frame rust problems.  Considering the rest of the car, I would examine the frame carefully before proceeding.

Odd someone would swap a model 27 rear axle into a Stude Avanti,...... but any port in a storm I guess!

Yes, the backing plates and drums are interchangeable between the 27 and 44....however, if you still have the factory Bendix discs up front, they are not compatible with the self-energizing rear drums which probably came on the model 27 axle.

In my humble opinion, you should seek out someone parting a '78-'85 Avanti ll and purchase the complete rear axle assy....it would have rear drums compatible with discs up front (you'd need to add proportioning valve to system) and it would also have flanged rear axle shafts......much superior to the original '63 Avanti tapered 'keyed' axles.

A stock '63-'64 Avanti driveshaft (or 109" wheelbase Lark driveshaft), either 4 speed or auto depending on what trans your Avanti has, would fit perfectly......Good luck!....Ed

I would think that the driveshaft would have to be from an Avanti or a Lark type that originally had a 44 axle, not from most Lark types with a 27 axle.

I guess that was a bad example.  I owned a 1987 Avanti coupe new, but do not remember its weight.  I do believe that more was standard on the Avanti than on a Monte Carlo.  The only weights that I could locate right off were 3330# for a '87 Avanti convertible and 3300# for a '87 Monte Carlo SS.

I looked at the titles for the various cars and the convertible with the single latch is 486 and I was mistaken since that title that says it is a 1989 car.

The long chassis coupe with the stuck hood and driver's door is listed as a 1988 and the last three digits of that car is 374

The 1988 convertible with the stuck hood is 286

So maybe the long chassis 1988 coupe also has the twin latches. I won't know until I pull that car out of storage.

The 288 and 374 are both 1988s.  The 374 is near the end of 1988s, so it MAY have the change in latches.  The 486 is mid-way through the 1989s.

I worked on this again today with some help from a friend and while we did not make any progress on getting the latches to actually pop, I do understand more about how the latches actually work.

My friend knows someone else who actually owns another car and we went over there to look closer at that car. It too is a 1988 Convertible but it must be a slightly later one since it has the single latch system. The owner of the car let us remove the two bolts that hold the latch assembly down to the firewall so we could flip the latch over to understand what the underside of the latch actually looks like. This really helped me understand how the latch parts work.

I wonder what Serial Number the other 1988 is.  You list yours as ---374.  Most listings show ---379 as the last 1988.  I believe that they go to at least ---396.  Does the other '88 lie in that range?

At the risk of sounding, well, weird - as a last ditch effort (starting now) try this for the '88 hood.  Pull on the hood release while at the Same Time someone else attempts to pull-up on one of the corners of the hood (start with drivers side).  You may want to consider a plastic pry tool like for interior trim removal (may want to tape the tool so as not to scratch anything).  Couldn't hurt!

Back on Nov. 6 the OP stated that the cable does not move.

Wow! Lots of replies. Thanks for the interest and information from everyone here.

I tried on the 1988 convertible today to reach up into the holes under the fenderwells to release the latches with a phillips screwdriver as suggested by silverstude but I did not have any luck with this. I have a friend coming over tomorrow afternoon and we are going to try some different things. I appreciate all of the excellent information. I bet the 1989 Coupe has the single latch assembly. I will have to crawl under the dash to see if I can find the hole for that. Unfortunately on that 1989 Coupe the driver's door also does not open so crawling under the driver's side of the dash will be even more difficult.

Could you see the two latches?  If not, since your 1988 was one of the last handful of 1988 models, perhaps it has the single latch 1989 system.

Toll Brothers has a few high end developments in NJ too. No need for me to move as I have a 3 car garage and a lift for both Studebakers

    Mark

My last house had a four car garage.  My current house has an oversize two car garage.  No matter how many garages it is never enough which leads to storage.

  11. Toll Brothers has several housing developments in this area.  I just discovered that Toll has an Avanti model (house).  Appropriately, it has two, two car garages, one at each end of the house.

Which 'Avanti connected' personality was quoted as saying..." The bankers told me I was out of my mind!"..."Cars, in this economy?"

    1) Sherwood Egbert......2) Steven Blake......3) Michael Kelly......or.....4) Charles Williams

Probably either 2 or 3, so I will say 2) Steven Blake.

The body work was by Jay Roth and the frame was by Herb Adams, so that eliminates no. 1.
