That may have been the case for a few Avanti owners, but not all.

There was an SDC member here years ago who purchased a 1964 Avanti when it was only two or three years old at the time.  All the 'Studebaker' emblems and nameplates had been removed from the car, which he subsequently replaced.

    It is a well-equipped Avanti.

I would have also " re established" the Studebaker scripting...but the fact that the prior owner of the '64 'pulled' all those emblems is a good example how some folks felt about these things in the later sixties- seventies....Ed

  2. Along the same lines..A parts manager at a dealership I once worked at told this story...Studebaker would ship cars by  train into the large rail yard at Readville, Mass..Somehow that manager (he was just a teen then, 1963) and some of his friends gained access to unloaded new Studebakers one night..and spent an enjoyable (????) half hour or so playing bumping cars with brand new Studebakers! ( I have no idea if Avantis were included in their 'fun'!!

  3. Wow!.... It's so good your Daytona wasn't destroyed by someone long ago!....Until you recently brought the car back into the light of day, I believe few knew it even still existed!........

    BRAVO!!!!!!

  4. Nelson, you may not be a millionaire right now, however you surely would be if you sold a few of those very special Studebakers at a Barrett- Jackson!

I believe that the interest by even non-Studebaker folks would be off the charts!!

For now though, those Studes certainly ended up with the right guy!...Best regards, Ed

  5. It would be 'neat' if you could bring the car back to Bonneville for a photo session, and perhaps a few 'runs'....Similar to what they did with the 'Bobby Issac' '69 Dodge Daytona (#71) a few years ago!

(If you could pull that off, I suspect we'd see that Stude Daytona on the front cover of a future HRM!!)

Oh! Interior headlight bezels were painted body color.

EXACTLY!... The area around headlight (under glass cover) was painted the exterior body color on 'round light' Stude Avantis..... Avanti Motors returned that look in '84 when the surround enclosing the 'new' rectangular headlight bulbs was also painted the exterior body color!

Went to the auction today, it was rescheduled from November 18th.

Bought R5423 for $4520 including buyer premium and credit card fee.

As near as I can tell, the hogs are intact (they have been sprayed with bedliner). I tested several areas with an ice pick. The 'A' pillars and window frame look great. The body is in very good condition with no evidence of wrecks. The frame is solid except for the brace under the spare tire well, an inexpensive fix. The paint is pretty bad and a non stock color, so will need a respray. Glass is good.  Engine and transmission were supposedly rebuilt a while ago. Both will need disassembly and inspection before use.

Quite a few of the missing parts are in boxes with the car. Will know more when I get a chance to do an inventory.

So far, looks like a good buy. Thanks to Dale for bringing this to our attention.

Good for you!...Best of luck with your exciting new acquisition!

What would be involved in that swap? If you're ever inclined to do it, I'll offer a couple more hands to help out.

Thank you!...but I don't think the conversion would be very hard..basically exchanging the rectangular headlight buckets for the earlier round type...and swapping the paInted plastic rectangular headlight bezels for the earlier metal chromed round type...The location of the two headlamp adjustment screws, and tension spring, would also need to be re- located.

Yes the 65 and 66 flanged axles are a decent alternative to the tapered 44. I think the 64 and earlier Dana 44 axles were 18 spline? and the 65 and 66 are 27 or maybe 29 spline. Also the Dana 27 and Dana 44 for 1965 and 66 share the same axle.

    Good info....Thanks!

It's probably a moot question anyway (in terms of finding one) because the R3/R4 flanged differentials are as rare as, well....R3/R4 Studebakers.

I have a '66 Lark-type Dana 44 flanged differential on my '64 Avanti.  Everyone seems to agree that this would be a good upgrade for a tapered axle.  Or, installing the Phil Harris flanged axles.

    --Dwight

Yes, I think that the later Avanti ll flanged axle diffs are similar to the diff you installed in your '64 Stude Avanti..A good move I believe!

I own a fairly low mileage (50K) flanged diff taken from a wrecked '84...and if the tapered axle original diff in my '63 Stude Avanti R2 ever gives me a problem, I'll no doubt swap it out for the '84.

Does anyone one know what kind of gaskets are used for the valve covers. I can’t get a good look at them of course, but I’m thinking they are the blue rubber type. Thanks in advance for your help.

I like the Fel-Pro brand cork gaskets...They seal well, and if you carefully glue them to the rocker cover they can be re used if it's necessary to remove cover.

I know on the R3 prototype and I believe the Bonneville Avantis that cross brass was cut out for blower clearance. Then later it was redesigned with the relief for the blower hose incorporated in to it. I think that is right. If so, I don’t think it was removed for the R3 install unless the plenum hit it?

Hmmm..that's interesting...I'm not sure if I ever saw that 'relief for the blower hose'.

This will be an interesting answer to learn.
Are you specifying the angled fascia panel housing the headlights?

"Avanti" badge. No more "II" designation. That's my guess.

I'll do an early nod with my Blake; move the turn indicators back to the 'pontoons'. Then install Hella FF75 (driving or fog pattern) or similar where Blake put the turn indicators. Extra light helps in dark New England nights.

    Close but no cigar!

P S........Like your idea of moving turn signals back to leading fender edges...and installing driving lights in the vacated bumper locations!
