I know on the R3 prototype and I believe the Bonneville Avantis that cross brass was cut out for blower clearance. Then later it was redesigned with the relief for the blower hose incorporated in to it. I think that is right. If so, I don’t think it was removed for the R3 install unless the plenum hit it?
Hmmm..that's interesting...I'm not sure if I ever saw that 'relief for the blower hose'.

This will be an interesting answer to learn.
Are you specifying the angled fascia panel housing the headlights?"Avanti" badge. No more "II" designation. That's my guess.
I'll do an early nod with my Blake; move the turn indicators back to the 'pontoons'. Then install Hella FF75 (driving or fog pattern) or similar where Blake put the turn indicators. Extra light helps in dark New England nights.
Close but no cigar!
P S........Like your idea of moving turn signals back to leading fender edges...and installing driving lights in the vacated bumper locations!

R4499, Body #3575 built May 63 has no cross brace.
OK..and that one's a gorgeous, factory black round light!
PS.. Paul, did you see the ad for the Avantis for sale on Rt 114 in Standish?..Check the 'Avantis For Sale' section on this forum.

Can anyone name the '84 Avanti front nose panel treatment that was returned... reminiscent of the original '63 Studebaker Avanti front nose panel 'look'?
-
If I used my '85 more, I'd probably take the time to change the headlights back to round, with the chrome ('64 type) square bezels.

When the square headlight bulbs came out around '84-'85 I liked them at first but as time passed I liked them less and less.
Yes, I agree...The square headlight bulbs (I own an '85) looked kind of nice when new....but the look doesn't seem to 'age' well!!

My answer depends on the question asked. If the question is as posed, then my answer is "square-headlight Avantis." If the question is: "Do you like round headlights or square headlights?" then my answer is round headlights." The 1964 Avantis have a number of improvements, such as more comfortable seats, that tilt me toward the 1964s.
Plus, I am a "64 man." I have 2 '64 Avantis, 3 '64 Hawks, and 1 '64 Cruiser. The '64s are arguably the best post-war Studebakers.
Most Avanti enthusiasts seem to prefer the round headlights. They give the car a more powerful look. Both look darn good to me, though.

Hey, your fleet of '64 Studebakers sounds AWESOME...Hat's off!
And, I meant the question to be about the 'look' of the headlight area..... I agree with your thoughts on that.

Ha ha true!... How about this idea.. A round headlight Studebaker Avanti with round CHROME 'surrounds' around the headlight bulbs.....similar to the square chrome surrounds we find around the headlights of 'square light' Studebaker Avantis ?????
(Instead of the stock '63 body color headlight background)

Yep!... probably...the '64 'smooth' decklid on this Hawk kind of threw me.

Here's a 'hot potato' for youse guys!!
.....To Avanti enthusiasts, which is really the most desired...'Round light' Studebaker Avantis, OR 'Square light' Studebaker Avantis??
(two cars in similar condition)

This fellow also has what looked to be a very solid '63 Gran Turismo Hawk (with '64 style 'smooth' decklid).... It was parked next to the turquoise '63 Avanti.....Ed

YES!....Thanks much Lou!

Hats off to Ed George, Nelson Bove, and the other Stude/Avanti participants at this annual Chicago show...Congrats to Nelson for winning the 'Bob Palma' award..and for entering the incredibly historic 'Bonneville' R3 Daytona convertible.
Nelson..when you have time, would you please post photos of '#1' on this Avanti Forum?... Thank you, Ed

Hi Geoff..... I spotted the Avantis while driving on Rt 114 on my way to Bridgton...I stopped, however no one was home, so I did not venture into the backyard...I did look over the turquoise '63 R1 (which was parked out front)....Aside from missing its front bumper Assy, and needing left fender repairs it looked to be a solid, driveable piece..with a good turquoise 'Deluxe' interior needing a good cleaning..It has an auto trans...Ed

I have a couple of those here too. (no brace, and left prop rod)
Well then, it seems the elimination of the hood cross brace was 'blended' in on some later Stude Avanti serial numbers before R4892,...and with no specific starting date......?
-
Earlier serial numbers without hood cross brace (such as R4130) may have been factory engineering types, or Avantis that had newer replacement body panels due to collisions, etc.

The parts manual shows a hood change after serial number 4892.
10 hours ago, 64studeavanti said:The change after 4892 is likely relocating the support bracket from left to right.
I don't know...I would think the elimination of the hood inner construction cross brace occurred at the same time the hood prop was re- located, and the left inner fender skirt modified to accomodate a group 24 size battery..At the first official Studebaker 'square light' Avanti....R4892.

Hello & welcome to the world of Avantis!
I've found owning the Stude Avanti shop & parts manuals to be an excellent source of tech info..These can be purchased from various Avanti/Studebaker vendors.

The change was made at a body number and not a serial number.
My Avanti is R4137 and body number RQ-2998. Built April, 1963
R4341 has body number RQ-3011. Built May, 1963
R4130 has a South Bend body, RQ-5190. Built April, 1963
That's odd....Studebaker normally made production changes on their Avantis (as well as their other models) at specific serial numbers.... (usually after serial number such and such)

George Dimitsas once offered fiberglass filler panels for Studebaker Avantis & Avanti IIs which were intermediate between the Studebaker Avanti front wheel opening and the Avanti II wheel opening. We once had a chapter member with an Avanti II with that mod and it looked just right. To me, the Stude Avanti's front wheel opening is too large (high), but Avanti Motors overdid it when adding that filler panel. Everybody to his own opinion, though.

I'd probably give my left ---- for one of the nine factory R3 Avantis, however, shimming the body up for R3 engine clearance on those cars (while retaining the high original Studebaker Avanti front wheel opening shape) gave those cars an awkward look compared to a 'normal' Stude Avanti....WAY too big a gap over the front tires. (In my humble opinion)

I once owned R4341 which was a round eyed Avanti. It had no hood brace. I always understood it was removed for the R3 or at least due to some Avantis having clearance issue with the hood.
If it was for R3 clearance it would have been phased in prior to R3 production. R4130 which was the R3 mule for the package does not have the brace.
Thanks for posting those serial numbers Gunslinger.

The hood brace was eliminated during the 1963 model year.
I've never seen a 'round light' Avanti without the hood cross brace...however, that doesn't mean later 'round light' hoods weren't built that way!....Can you supply the Studebaker Avanti's serial number for this change?
-
I believe that the inner construction hood cross brace was eliminated on the '64 Studebaker Avanti (square light) models due to the R3 engine option (with air box) coming on line....?
'63 returns.. '84 Avanti!
