  1. James, Posts like yours are what makes forums like this one an interesting and useful tool.......I never would have thought to check Rock Auto for those window motor gears. Now I know where to look, and also have a part number! Thanks!

  2. As it turned out, the upper finger on the new trans oil pan had to be bent back flat against the side of the pan for the filler tube to line up properly and easily. I thought about doing a front and rear band adjustment, per shop manual, while the pan was down, but as this transmission shifts very nicely....I figured why mess with it?.....Pan is back on with no leaks. (so far!)

  3. Had a great day yesterday. (5/4) We took the '63 Avanti to a local car show co sponsored by the 'Lions Club' and the 'Wheels Of Time' auto club. Beautiful weather. (finally!) Approx sixty cars of all domestic makes were displayed, and six trophies were awarded.....Our Avanti received two of them!

  4. The driver's side power window in my '83 Avanti had been acting 'sluggish' lately.....The other day it came to a complete halt! As these power window motors sell for around $200, I decided to try repairing it. I taped the window glass to the vent window frame to keep it up and out of the way, then I removed the window regulator/motor assembly from the door. Upon disassembly of the motor, I found that a small corner piece had broken off one of the powerful 'field'? magnets, which are bonded to the inside of the motor housing. This piece had gotten jammed between the inside of the motor housing and the rotating armature. I removed the debris, cleaned everything up, lubed the end bushings, polished up the commutator, and put it all back together. (There was hardly any wear on the two commutator brushes!)

After cleaning and lubing the window regulator, I re-attached the motor, and installed the assembly back into the door. I LUCKED OUT !.....The window works smoother and quicker than ever now!

  5. I agree with what Avanti83 is saying here. It really boils down to how much of the mentioned work you can do yourself. (troughs, etc.) If you have to send the car out for the needed repairs, it would probably be better to look for another Avanti in better shape, even if the initial cost is a few thousand more. Either way, this Avanti will be 'right' for somebody, and really should not be parted out. (in my opinion)

  6. I'm replacing the transmission oil pan on my '63 Avanti with a new one. There is a bracket spot welded to the right (passenger) side of the new pan with two 'fingers' on it, which stick out perpendicular to the side of the pan. I take it this bracket is supposed to center and stabilize the trans filler tube? (This bracket was missing or removed from the original pan)

  7. Also, I did see an R2 Avanti (not mine) where the owner obtained longer supercharger belts and routed the belts OVER the water pump pulley onto a dual groove idler pulley located directly over the water pump pulley. I think the idea was to relieve the water pump of the additional strain of carrying the blower drive load.......Interesting!

  8. That sounds reasonable (on the twin mount question). About the supercharged factory Avanti II, I've seen photos of that car (I wonder if it still exists?) There is a fellow here in Mass that owns a Chevrolet V8 powered '63 Studebaker Avanti with a paxton supercharger. The installation is very clean, and mounts the blower exactly where Studebaker installed it on an R2 job. As a matter of fact, at a fast glimpse of this Avanti one may think he's looking at an R2 Studebaker install!

  9. Did Paxton Products ever offer a left side supercharger mount for the Studebaker V8 (as per R5 engine)? Or was that a completely 'one off' part? I've seen dual superchargers on one or two privately owned Avantis, and wondered if they used home-made brackets, or original Paxton parts?

  10. Dayton wire wheels look beautiful on a show car. The factory installed them on my '83 (RQB3655) for the new car auto show in Boston in '83, but the original buyer had them removed before delivery for maintenance reasons. Any idea ($$) what you'd sell them for?

  11. I've owned my '63 Avanti for years. Early on the car 'ate' a couple of water pumps. (R2 engine) Quite a while back I purchased a lightweight aluminum water pump pulley from Lionel Stone, installed it with a new flanged Avanti water pump, and haven't had a problem since. I know that Studebaker balanced the original cast iron water pump pulley, but between its heavy weight, and the chance it could still be slightly off balance, I always thought that this original cast pulley was the cause of the water pump failures. Opinions?

  12. About 2 years ago, 2 of my sons rebuilt engines in there muscle cars, (GM). One is a 427 sbc, the other is a 496bbc. . After using the proper assembly lube and following the proper break in procedure, both cams wiped out on breakin. After contacting the cam companies they were told to use Rotella T oil for the break in procedure, because of the lack of ZDDP in popular oils. Both engines were disassembled and cams replaced. They used Rotella T on breakin and everything was fine. Too bad, it wasn't stated in their breakin procedure at the time, could be by now. Is this a fluke or not?

Both engines have high valve spring tension, although inner springs were removed during breakin, per cam breakin procedure.

Did they continue to use the Rotella oil after the break in periods?

  13. Took the '63 for a road test with its new (old) 3.31 TT axle.....and I really like the way it now moves out in 1st. The 3.07 was just too 'tall' for me. Also, I didn't really notice a much higher RPM in high gear....so all is well. Refreshing the rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders is noticeable when stopping. Now.....on to the Thibeault stainless steel exhaust system install!
