  1. Yes, if the leak is at the crimp, a new hose is a must I believe. But don't be too concerned about that.....custom high and low pressure a/c hoses are made up all the time for new van and motor home conversions. Barb fittings are readily available that push into suitable a/c hose, (they fit real tight and can't be pulled back out) and final sealed with a screw clamp. I'd bring your Avanti to a good a/c shop in your area and talk it over.

  2. Okay, I understand what you're saying here...and it's true you'll never keep freon in that system with a leak like that! If You undo the suspect fitting (after the freon is drained) you'll find a rubber o-ring that completes the seal between the two halves. Just take the o'ring to any auto parts store and they'll fix you right up. The only thing is, if you are using R-134 in your a/c system, you need to ask for R-134 compatible o-rings. You can always tell them as they are green in color as opposed to the usual black color. If the leak is at the schrader valve itself, you can sometimes just tighten it down a little with a tire valve removal tool, or just remove the old valve and replace it with a new one. If the leak is at the crimp union which connects the rubber a/c hose to the metal end fitting, then you'll need to replace the hose. This will have to be custom made if Nostalgic Avanti doesn't have one....but custom made hoses can be made up at most any of the larger auto supply stores. Just bring the old one in.

  3. Just wrestled the 3.31 TT rear end assembly into My '63. These units have definitely gotten heavier over the years(!!!). I made up some 1/16" rubber 'pads' and placed them between the top of the leaf spring and the rear axle mounting 'perch'. Studebaker installed a 1/4" thick pad between the bottom of the leaf spring and the shock mounting plate, but nothing at the top of the leaf spring. I figure a little extra insulation wont hurt!.....Now onto the install of the brake backing plates, and setting of axle shaft end play!

  4. I'm 99% sure that the Allstate Avanti was 'Avanti Gold'.....although I wouldn't bet my life on it! And,....I'd say that it does make sense that Champion would use #8 in their ads. For one thing, the darker color would stand out better in b/w photos. Also, the average Joe would have no idea which Avanti set what record, as, at the time, Studebaker wasn't really specific about that.

  5. These photos that you're posting are GREAT!! The #8 Avanti is not the same car as the 'Due Cento'. The #8 Avanti was the 'backup' car for the gold #9 Avanti that set all the records in 1963. #8 was part of the Granatelli-Studebaker Bonneville effort of 1963 where Studebaker set over 330 speed records. As far as I know, #8 wasn't credited with any records. The Studebaker Avantis that were present were the red #8, the gold #9, and the 'Due Cento'. The gold Sears-Allstate 'cross country' Avanti (Paula Murphy) also made an appearance I think. And several different Studebaker Larks and Hawks were also there.

  6. Jack, I believe that at least one prototype 340 engine was running in a Lark-type car. Several years ago, SASCO owner Dennis Lambert was telling me and a friend the story that he actually was given a ride in a Lark type vehicle with the prototype engine. He related that it sounded better and stronger than any 289 Studebaker engine and pulled stronger and faster than any Avanti, even the R2 or R3 engines. There was no supercharger either. He said that there was at least the one, but I think that there probably were a few others that were built. I think most were disposed of at the bottom of the pit at their foundry.

Many Avanti owner/drivers said the same thing about the 'pull' of the 400 chev small block which came in mid 70's Avantis....They'd run away from Stude R2's, at least on the low end!

  7. On the series of photos of the 'red' Granatelli 'Due Cento', (including the video), these are all photos of the same Avanti. The video shows the car with the 299 CI 'early' R3 engine at Bonneville in late '62. The next year the Granatelli's came back with this same car as the 'Due Cento', with the big 'R5' engine installed, and all the body mods. This particular Avanti was (is) one of the pre-production experimental (EX) Studebaker Avantis.

  8. You're taking on an interesting project. The Avanti I would like to see replicated is the twin-supercharged 'Due Cento' from 1963. You are a painter, and probably also do bodywork. If all the unique exterior features that were on the original car were duplicated (hood scoop, belly pan, fender skirts, etc.) it would really be something to see. All the original signage including 'STUDEBAKER' on the rear fenders would also need to be duplicated. (And 'spun aluminum' wheel discs would also be a must!)

  9. It's known that the special cylinder heads used on the 304.5 cubic inch R3 Studebaker V8 were actually intended for a larger 340 cubic inch V8 that never made it into production. Was this 340 engine essentially the same Stude V8 we know, but cast with larger cylinders? Were there other differences beside the larger cylinders?

  10. I like the look's of the aluminum radiator in 'Avanti83's' car. If I needed to replace an Avanti radiator, I think I'd go this route as aluminum cools very well....and the price is right! I remember that the brass core of an original '63-'85 Avanti radiator interchanges with a Lincoln Mark l. (With different end tanks.) These brass cores are super pricey now. As a 'just in case' extra part, I bought just about the last original Avanti radiator SASCO had several years ago...Never needed to use it....it's still in the original Studebaker packaging!

  11. I'd try to determine exactly why the rear 1/4 window in your '63 Avanti wont close before I ordered parts. Is something in the latch mechanism broken, or is the window 'binding' on something? Sometimes if the large slotted screw at the end of the link is wound in a bit too tightly it will create a bind situation making the window next to impossible to close.

  12. With most all of the older spark plug numbers obsolete or superceded by now, in the opinions of R2 Avanti owners out there, what is the current spark plug of choice? Is there one brand and part number of spark plug that stands 'head and shoulders' above the rest in terms of sustained performance and dependability in the supercharged engine? Opinions sought...

  13. Great info! What really needs to happen here, in my opinion, is to somehow reunite this marvelous engine with the Avanti it was originally installed in. Hopefully, someday in the not to distant future this happy marriage will happen!
