  1. My opinion....If doing the work yourself, buy one gallon of a good quality paint stripper at an auto body supply store. It does not necessarily have to be for fiberglass. Strip one panel at at time..ONLY. Let the chemical do its thing, and then scrape the bubbled paint off with a plastic squeege. A second coat may be required...then scrape again and then (IMPORTANT) Flush..Flush..Flush the stripped panel off with cold water until ALL the stripper has been removed...then let dry in the sunlight (if possible). Then sand the panel with a 'DA' sander using '180' grit sandpaper. Do any necessary body repairs, and prime. ALSO...pushing out the windshield and the back glass is a MUST on Avantis. Good luck!

  2. I saw that episode. It looked like a very nice Avanti, but the owner left a few problems on the car un-fixed....and these problems showed up when they evaluated this Avanti. For example, the battery was NG and they had to jump it to get it started, and some of the gauges didn't work. No big deal, but the comment was made.."I wonder what else is wrong with this car?"

  3. I think that a few early Avanti rear windows did blow out if the side windows were rolled down at high speed....Studebaker fixed the problem with tighter fit tolerances and improved rear window fastening in later production cars. I still think that plaque is generic though, as I remember seeing them advertised in more than one period auto magazine.
