    Avanti Elegance!

Good guess… but no! HINT !…. What can be applied to a new car once the design has been approved and assembled?
  5. No flat panels?

    Avanti Elegance!

You ‘nailed it’ with ‘excess chrome’!, However, the second item wasn’t a grille.… Although we do know that for the Avanti project Loewy did not want to see a conventional grille on the car. Any other thoughts on that second item of ‘applied elegance’ ??
  8. My guesses are, No grill and No excess chrome Pb
  9. Call Dave Thibeault…his tel # is… 978 897 3158
  10. What are two good examples of what Raymond Loewy considered to be “applied elegance” in car design ? (Styling treatments he strongly disliked)
  11. Concerning the (then) continuing development of the Studebaker Avanti body design, what was Raymond Loewy speaking of when he referred to “space trading” ?
  12. Regarding designing the Studebaker Avanti… Which member of the design team commented about doing this work in the New York office…..”Too many friends reach you too easily in this office… It’s fine, but we had to get the job done” ? 1) John Ebstein….2) Robert Andrews…. 3) Thomas Kellogg…..or…..4) Raymond Loewy

  14. We'll nee some more information before offering suggestions. 1. What's the current condition of the AC system? Are the compressor, condenser, hoses, evaporator, etc in good shape? Is the system charged properly? 2. Have you taken steps to minimize outside heat from entering the cabin? Are all engine compartment grommets and seals in place? Are the footwell fresh air and heater doors closing properly? Is the heater control water valve closing properly?
  15. These are from Bob Johnstone’s Avanti registry. The car has possibly been sold to someone in Oregon. Mike
  16. Another vote for Autolite AP85 plugs. Brad Bez put them in our R3, and I have been so pleased with them, I now have Autolites in a number of our other cars and they are all working great.
  17. It looks as though someone made an effort to redirect fuel tank vapors for some reason. Perhaps the original vent hose loop was compromised so the quick fix was to drill a few more holes in the tank and add some plumbing. As Groucho Marx once said: “ The problem with making something foolproof, is that fools are so ingenious.”
  18. More than one Avanti performance shop recommend Autolite AP85 Platinum spark plugs for an R2. That's what I run in mine.
  19. The amount of change you are mentioning won't affect the caster enough to make a difference. Remember the king pin front end design of the early 50s wasn't set up for much caster. Shinny bias ply tires, lower speed limits and mostly non power steering cars ran zero to negative caster.
  20. Endurance is a new resource for me. Thanks.
  21. Looks like it.
  22. Would this be the part?
  23. They are available new from Stude international or Endurance built products etc. Peter
  24. Looking for a source. Thanks.
  25. I looked at a crossover chart and the XR4 is equivalent to a Champion RJ14YC…I think that’s a bit too hot. The XR5 is closer to the proper heat range but crossover charts can be inaccurate when it comes to heat ranges.
  26. Read at one time that NGK XR4 (5858) plugs would be good choice for a '64 R2 with stock ignition, anyone can confirm that?,,,
  27. This is a very good deal… I priced a new Hurst Comp Plus shifter & kit for a Studebaker Avanti five years ago, and was told $700-$800 (just for the shifter & kit)
  28. Replace the idler pulley bearing….. BCA#203FF
