Studebaker’s Transistor Ignition was standard equipment in 1964 on R3 & R4 equipped models, and optional on other (non 6 cyl) models….True?

The Avanti that was to be given away as a prize and displayed on the ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ TV Show was a model year ….?…. model. 1) 1987…..2) 1988……3) 1989…..or……4) 1990

I'd suggest the following on your car. With the shifter in park, disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter from underneath the car. Then move that linkage connected to the transmission to be sure it can be moved through all positions. If so, then put it back into park and then move it into reverse. Next go into the car and do the same exact thing. Be sure the shifter goes through all of the positions. Go to park, then reverse. Now under the car, loosen the linkage adjustment nuts and reinstall the linkage arm into the shifter. Tighten the nuts evenly on both sides. Go back into the car and test the shifter now. IF there was a problem with either the shifter or transmission when you checked them independently, then you know where the problem is. Usually, the linkage adjustment can be done in Neutral but the shifter can slide into drive when you are working on it so I use reverse since it locks into place.

Another oddity concerning 63R1319… In the 2019 AOAI Roster, two owners are listed for this Avanti… In two different States…. Indiana & Alabama!!!!!

SDC Bulletin Vol 4 Number 3… 3/72

Where did you get the info on this car. I have the 2011 sales data from the barn where it was found, but nothing in the description like that.../

Or VIN 1470 has no doors. 😎 As for where the Line Number is handwritten twice, if there are no guesses, I'll post the answer later today.

Can the GM turbo400 transmission be removed without pulling the engine?

Great news Jim!! -
Yes they were Dwight… but that isn’t the oddity on 63R1319. SO!…… The odd feature on this Avanti was … a THREE SPEED WITH OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION !! I’d certainly guess installed after this Avanti R2 was built…. But that’s how 63R1319 was advertised for sale!

Can the GM turbo400 transmission be removed without pulling the engine?
Jim S replied to Jim S's topic in 1965-85 Avanti
Great news! I finally found a good shop in my area willing to tackle the removal of my transmission. They had to cut a section of the right side exhaust pipe for clearance, but got it out. The torque convertor snout was worn and causing premature wear on the front seal and the pump bushing. Hopefully a new convertor and seals will finally stop all the leakage! -
That is interesting… I’d guess someone mistook a 1 for a 2 TWICE!! I have no idea where that PO# you mention can be found on Stude Avantis…. However, I’d like to know!!

2) Dropped front suspension spindles IIRC dropped spindles were used at Bonneville

Thanks for asking. No, I'm referring to the Production Order Line Number as listed in the Line Number Box on the Passenger Car Production Order form and the multipage Vehicle Inspection Report. Also, my '63 R2 VIN is R2470 and the handwritten inner door number you mentioned is 1470 on both doors. Interesting.

I’ve seen serial number hand written on inner door (upholstery removed) Is that what you mean by production number?
-
Here's an Avanti trivia question from the quiz at the recent Palm Springs Meet. Name two places where you find your Studebaker Avanti’s production number hand written on parts of the car.

Thanks, I did remove the caps from the rocker shafts to clean it out,,,

Don't tell me that R1319 had a vinyl roof.....

I remember hearing about that Avanti, however, that car is not the subject of this trivia question… so #1 isn’t the answer here.

I’ll say #1…I remember Studebaker made an Avanti for a car show event that had one vinyl covered front seat and one leather covered…don’t remember whether it was a high back but possibly could be this car.

It's time to let Thea go. I've enjoyed her and enjoy my crude restorations (I've never started on this one), but this sale will benefit McPherson College's Auto Restoration program, so others will know how to do it right, and even make a career of it. Solid frame and hog troughs, and a really nice driver! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1980-avanti-avanti-ii-2/?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Bid_Placed_Seller
