studegary
For model years 1965 through 1991, what model year had the lowest production and what model year had the highest production? Bonus - give the numbers.

studegary
Correct! (in 14 minutes) I thought that I might trip some up with the 1986 part.
mfg
Hmmmm!....I thought that 1983 was the highest production year for the post-Studebaker Avanti...I'll double check that.
mfg
As 1986 is considered a non-production year for the Avanti,.....The CORRECT answer to Gary's original question would be.....Lowest...1991......Highest...1983. PS---Sorry guys, but we may as well get it right!) Edited November 13, 2015 by mfg

PS---Sorry guys, but we may as well get it right!) Can you prove you are correct? In John Hull's book he shows the 1984 Avanti production at 265 and 1983 production at 212. Do you have anything to prove him wrong? I would think his figures would be accurate. 1991 is the the lowest at 17.

mfg
Bob, I really don't understand your point,... The fact is 1983 was the highest 'production year' for post Studebaker Avantis, and, through 1991,....'91 was the lowest......There's no use in trying to re-create history Bob,....but 'be my guest' if you feel like trying!! The point is that 1984 (265) is the highest production year and not 1983 (212). If you check the serial numbers from John Hull's book with the cars on Bob's web site you will see this is fact. The serial numbers for the 1991 start at 1201 and end at 1217. You say only seven were built, yet there are 11 on Bob's site with the highest being 1213. Do you have evidence to prove otherwise? Unless you do I have to believe that John Hull's figures are accurate.

PS---Sorry guys, but we may as well get it right!) From Studegary - (I can't get that left margin line to go away.): I stated:"...what model year had the lowest production..." That would include zero (1986), not just the years that did have Avanti production. 1986 is a model year, just not one that included Avanti production. 1984 had a higher production number than 1983. From Studegary - (I can't get that left margin line to go away for my reply.): I am using data that predates John's book by many years. I general, I agree with John's book, including 1983 at 212 and 1984 at 265. The Serial Numbers that I have for 1991 are 1201 to 1215 (that would be 15). Perhaps John uncovered some additional information that brings the number up to 17. In either case, it is not seven as previously stated. Does anyone know of a 1991 with a higher number than 15? mfg
Wrong Gary,....289 'Blake' Avantis were assembled in 1983....the highest post Studebaker Avanti production year. (You're no doubt thinking of the fiscal year) And,...as NO Avantis were built in 1986, it cannot be called an 'Avanti PRODUCTION year',....can it. And, Avanti production in 1991 totaled SEVEN vehicles maximum. (In actuality, possibly less!)
regnalbob
As I explained in my previous post there were more than SEVEN. http://www.studebaker-info.org/AvantiAAV.html#1991 Edited November 15, 2015 by Regnalbob

PERHAPS it is a better source than the old numbers that I have and John Hull's fairly recent book. I did NOT refer to "...an Avanti PRODUCTION year...". I simply referred to "model years" in general. mfg
Actually Gary, you mentioned the word production TWICE in your opening question!! To recap,....1983 was the post Studebaker Avantis highest production year....Steven Blake had just taken over the company, and, after making a few initial mods to the cars and dropping the 'll' designation, pushed real hard for sales....and indeed sold a lot of Avantis. Blake did this by heavy (and expensive) advertising, and getting major auto magazines to road test his (then) new Avantis. Things were still 'on a roll' into model year 1984, but then the horrible paint/warranty problems occured...and sales of new Avantis took a big dive......By model year 1985 only 100 or so Avantis were sold. And as far as 1986 being a 'production' year for the Avanti,.... well, all I have to say about that is try telling a Corvette enthusiast that 1983 was the Corvette's 'lowest production' year!!!!!! This is really all I have to say on this subject..... we'll just have to 'agree to disagree' I guess!....................................................1983...HIGHEST....1991....LOWEST! regnalbob
Just some more information for those who may be interested in the production figures for the 1983 and 1984 Avantis. The starting serial numbers and production numbers are from John Hull's book, Avanti The Complete Story. Model year 1983 3590 - 3776 187 20th Anniversary 3801 - 3825 25 Total 212 The cars listed on Bob Johnstones web site start at 3592 and end with 3776. Also the 20th Anniversary models 3802 and the last 3825. Model year 1984 3850 - 4114 265 There are 130 cars listed starting with the first 3850 and ending with the last 4114. Quote from John's book: " I believe it to be the most accurate projections ever compiled on actual production data." The info on Bob's website seems to confirm this.
