Folks,

I’m working on a 64 Avanti with tilt wheel. The cable from the turn signal mechanism to the switch is broken. I can get a new cable, but there is no where in the shop manual, that I can find that gives a description of how to replace it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

As I’m sure you know, the factory tilt wheel option on ‘64 Avantis is quite rare.

That same tilt mechanism is more commonly found in early ‘A’ series Avanti ll’s.

I’ve never worked on one, but I think that GM used the same unit in mid sixties Buicks, Olds, Chevy, etc.

I’d guess that if you can source a shop manual for one of those vehicles it would give you the info you need in depth… Good luck!

I think the go-to guy for that would be Dan Booth at Nostalgic Motors.

Thanks, I’ll give him a call next week.

The turn signal switch itself is located down the column nearer the floor. The cable runs to a bracket on the switch at the switch end, and to the lever mechanism under the steering wheel. You have to pull the wheel. There is no electrical part under the wheel like non-tilt cars except for the horn contact. It is the same as 63-65 GM Saginaw tilt wheels but the column itself is a Stude only part. After 65 they were totally different.

I would second the contact Dan Booth.

i replaced the cable in my 67 Avanti II. The Cable was ok but the housing was broken. I took a few pictures but deleted most of them after I was done and the turn signals were working.  The switch had gotten water in it and was stuck, I think that caused the plastic housing to break.

The  steering wheel and top portion of the column will need to be removed.  The first mistake I made was pulling the cable out the bottom and not attaching a wire to snake the new cable back in.  I like fishing but not when they are not biting but after many attempts and a couple of bait changes I got a piece of bailing/mechanics wire up thru the column. Then was able to pull the new cable in.

As best I remember I did a lot of google searching and found some write-ups for Oldsmobile and Buicks  with the similar Saginaw tilt column's.

This is where the black plastic housing was broken.  This is the top of the cable.

The new cable has a metal housing

These are the only pictures I saved.
