"Standard" Stude V8 fuel pump vs. Avanti R1 fuel pump
A0136 replied to Mark L's topic in 1963-64 Avanti
If you’re not worried about keeping original a filter like this would work. Just run a 1/4” hose down to the return line. this is a NAPA 3054 filter -

This is a picture from the work shop manual. The second picture is a screen grab from a posting on rebuilding an R series pump. I had time to dig thru some boxes today and found the restrictor fitting from R1358. The third and fourth picture show the restrictor fitting. A #57 (.043) drill bit just fits snuggly. -

I don’t have a fitting that I can get to to measure the restriction. Hopefully someone else here does -

Did you still have the original fittings. I believe there is a restrictor in the fitting. -

Mark There are 3 tests you will want to do. pressure, volume and inlet vacuum They are outlined in the Avanti workshop manual. New filter? There must be some reason the return line was capped off??? -

Mark The R1 and R2 pumps are a little larger in diameter for more volume and have a stronger diaphragm spring for higher pressure. The fuel pump on top is the standard 61-64 3155S pump 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 psi The second pump is an R1 3509S pump 5-7 psi The third pump is an R2 3508S pump 5-7 psi -
Good to hear you got the Avanti running. Yes check the switch adjustment. Steve

Greg The starter cut out switch and neutral safety switch are the same thing. The starter cut out switch is mounted on the side of the transmission. Look in the transmission section for adjustment info. Try moving the shift lever from park to neutral while you have the key in the start position—- foot on the brake pedal. Follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will connect to the magnetic switch (solenoid)

Nelson The Avanti rear brakes are self centering not the more common self energizing design. The front shoe does more of the braking when rotating forward. This is why the longer lining goes to the front and is called the forward shoe and the shorter lining goes to the rear and is called the reverse shoe. On the self energizing design the shorter lining ( primary ) goes on the front and the longer (secondary ) lining goes on the rear. The secondary lining does most of the braking. The forward shoe/lining wants to rotate with the drum but is stopped by the solid anchor at the bottom this will cause the bottom to wear faster than the top. It is common for the shoes to be installed with the short lining in the front ( like they would be for self energizing brakes ) this will cause the front lining to wear even faster. Steve

Rick There is a space. It looks like a 1/16” or so—1.5 to 2mm. I haven’t noticed any rattling, clicking or knocking. If needed an anti rattle clip from a more modern disc brake might be modified to fit under the retainer. Steve

#3 The exhaust manifold. The air injected into the exhaust supply's oxygen so unburned fuel can be burned in the exhaust.

Avanti and Jet Thrust engines have 16 lobes. Other Studebaker V-8 engines have 17– one for the fuel pump on early V-8 engines. If you count the lobe that is bolted to the front of the cam it would be 17 and 18 on engines 1955 and after.

Reproduction Halibrand Wheels - which are better?
A0136 replied to Boozeman's topic in 1963-64 Avanti
Nelson i consider myself to be a mid level caso so the $254.20 to have a set shipped to Washington was painful. As the old saying goes “no pain no gain” Looking forward to warmer weather on the left coast. -
Reproduction Halibrand Wheels - which are better?
A0136 replied to Boozeman's topic in 1963-64 Avanti
I put Tom’s wheels on my 67 Avanti II. Since taking this picture I removed the 1/2” spacer from the front suspension. Now to get the paint done. I think ether brand of wheels look great on a Studebaker. -
The pictures I posted are stock Avanti suspension.

If they are turned over part of the support circled in blue that the king pin mounts to would be upside down. If it was cut on the yellow line and the king pin mount turned over the support would look more like the R3 piece. Wouldn’t it be nice to find a box of those in a parts stash.
-
The support for the pin and bushings is vey different. That would lower the front. Thanks again Nelson.
-
Thanks Nelson That does look different. I am headed to my shop now to take a look. It’s 15 degrees and the shop is 2 blocks away but I won’t be able to go to sleep if I don’t go look.

Any chance of seeing some pictures of the lowered upper control arm inner mount and the drop spindles. I have looked at the stock spindle and kingpin a few times with the thought of lowering the front end without changing the other suspension geometry. Not many R3 Avanti’s to look at out here on west side of the country. 🤔

Were the drop spindles a new part or a modified existing spindle?
