forward Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 What are the correct replacement shocks (front and rear) for a 1982 Avanti? I searched on "shocks" but did not find anything. Thanks in advance.
ronmanfredi Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 I bought mine from here: Shock Absorbers & Bumpers - Avanti Parts & Restorations, Inc.
mfg Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 You may also consider calling Dave Thibeault on those shocks… He recently sold me a set of gas shock absorbers for my Golden Hawk that fit and perform perfectly!
Dwight FitzSimons Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 (edited) Some recommend Koni shocks (dampers) - see pix below. IIRC the application is 1980 Camaro. Part numbers are: 8040-1017 [front], 8040-1018 [rear] There may be some modification(s) required to fit them. Bilstein shocks (dampers) have also been discussed. --Dwight Edited February 6 by Dwight FitzSimons
grant mills Posted February 9 Report Posted February 9 Any front shock that you buy today will have an issue. That base flange is 3 inches side-to-side, while the mounting holes are 3.5 in. apart on centre. I jury rigged extensions for each side using flat stock of the correct width that enclosed the outer edges of the flanges and had a slot in the middle to extend the flange. I also made a spacer from the flat stock to cover both the original flange and the extension to keep everything in place....There is a description of all this in my posting in the 84-91 forum under the name "front coil springs"
wildfelr Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 Myers stude in Ohio installed the correct shocks on the front of RQB3263 several years ago all good
grant mills Posted February 12 Report Posted February 12 The alternative to the spacers is: remove the (wider) flange/rubber from the base of the old shock and use it to replace in the flange in the new shock. I had already tossed the old shocks when I learned this.

I had already tossed the old shocks when I learned this. I hear you… however, removing the original flange/rubber from old shock for a re- install into the new shock is easier said than done. (but not impossible!)
mfg Posted February 12 Report Posted February 12 I believe that the lower crossbar on the shocks Dave Thibeault sells to fit ‘57 - ‘ 66 Studes have the correct ‘spread’.
