What major piece of equipment factory installed on Studebaker Avanti R4330 make it an unusual Avanti?

Since it was an R1 that resided in Erie Pennsylvania for many years, I will make a guess of a rear window defroster/defogger or something else related to the harsh Winter there, such as an automatic sanding unit for the rear wheels. 

Now, one later, R4331 was made for a Congressman.
