I really see 52 as the correct response to this (How many Avantis? not How many Editions?).  My initial answer was based on what I thought that you were seeking.

Three -- 20th Anniversary in '83, 25th Silver Anniversary in '88, and a 50th Anniversary AMT Edition  :o :D  :P   (see pic below)

I was thinking in terms of a run of production cars, not a one off show car.  Then the real answer to your question, as originally stated, is 53.
