  1. Problem is, Lew, none of those people would have a clue who Ian Fleming was.

One of the neatest comments I've heard about my black 84 with the resin bumpers was that "From the front it looks like "Darth Vader"

Now when I show it I place a Darth Vader Halloween mask on the hood!

  2. Bruce is totally correct on avoiding the use of DOT 5 in our Avanti's. When my 78 II master cylinder died and leaked fluid, my master mechanic installed a new GM Master Cylinder and filled with DOT 3. He said under no circumstances use DOT 5 in these cars. DOT 5 "eats" rubber, gaskets and causes bubbles, as stated by Bruce.

The orihinal master cylinder in my 84 had a label with red letters that said "DOT 5 Fluid only".

  3. Hi Mark,

I like your plan but I think you will find that disputes between customers and insurance companies are NOT NEWS. Too common and remember

who buys those big display adds in the newspaper, not you would be my guess. Newspapers rely on advertising, NOT circulation, for income.

If you don't want an attorney at least think like one and document everything you do, no matter how insignificant it seems to be.

I think New Jersey has an insurance commissioner, it doesn't cost anything to talk to them. Good Luck.

A couple years ago my E-TYPE roadster was rear ended by a woman doing, by her admission, over 40mph.

The shop that does a lot of work on exotic cars said that it could be repaired but the cost would be excessive.

Since I have owned the car since 1970 I really wanted it to be fixed.

So I told her adjuuster that I would sign a release for any claims for "pain and suffering" if they would fix the car. Her company, which was afiliated with her church some way, said that they hadn't had any dealings with that type of car. They subregated the claim to my company."Hagerty's".

The body tub was virtually destroyed and a new one was found and imported from Covington England.

Virtually every thing from the firewall back was replaced new. The car is probably better (no rust) and straighter than new.

The repair took one year, eleven months and twelve days, and the shop said they managed to get it in under $65k!

Thought every one would like to hear a good story,

  4. I so appreciate the assistance from this site and the many members. Glad to know my 64 is "normal" though the temps from my 73 Avanti II with the A/C on was at least 40 degrees cooler. I think the temperature just makes me nervous. Thanks as always.

    Mark

Actually you probably should look into raising the temps of your 73 to be more like the 64.

The small block GM engine will run much better and last longer at the higher temps.

  5. Some jets also used water injection for takeoff, especially at heavy weights.

The most recently used ones were KC-135As with the J57 engines before they were re-engined with turbofans in the 80-90s.

Part of the reason for water injection is that when gasoline is burned at standard atmospheric temperture and pressure it expands aprox 750 times. When water is vaporized under the same conditions it expands aprox 1600 times. So if the burning gasoline will also vaporize some water it should put out substantialy more power. However the water vapor will combine with the exhaust gasses forming sulfuric acid. Not a good thing in an internal combustion engine.

  6.

I have always really liked the look of this aircraft but had not thought I would see one in person. They are fairly rare in the States. Short story: I saw this one land at the Airport in Abingdon,Va and was allowed out on the ramp to shoot some pictures. This particular aircraft is owned/operated by Avantair. Hey,90K buys you 25 hours. Sign me up.

It looks a lot like the Beechcraft "Starship" that Burt Rutan designed. The Starship looks better!

  7. The GT Hawk...one of the most handsome cars ever designed...particularly the '64 with vinyl half roof. Add an R-series engine and full R-package and you've got a really great car.

In Spite of some fitting problems, the 53 hard top was the best looking American car ever produced.

I always felt that the overall best was the 61-68 E-Type Jaguar, second was the 53 Studebaker hard top ,and number three, the 64-85 Avanti.

  8. If the core is bypassed, it likely was because the core leaked and the previous owner didn't want to repair it or saw no need to do so. There's two ways to test it...reconnect it, open the heater control valve and pressurize the system and see if it leaks all over your carpeting, or remove the heater core and take it to a radiator shop to be tested. If it is leaky, a good shop may be able to repair it depending on how bad the leaks are. You could be able to find a good used one...I'm not aware of any interchanges on the market but there may be some that can be adapted. The other alternative is to live with it the way it is and leave it bypassed.

Since you have the old core you can take it to any GOOD radiator shop and have a duplicate made. They aren't an odd shape or any thing tricky so I think you will be suprised how inexpensive it will be.

  9. Look in a Summit Racing or Jeg's catalog or their websites. They each sell their own brand of fuel pumps, as well as Carter, Edelbrock and Holley. Each is shorter than stock and are usually able to be "clocked" in order to line up the fuel line for any application. The down side is they likely will be somewhat more expensive than a stock replacement type but on the other hand are going to be better quality.

Summit Racing also has a line of stock replacement parts as well...look and see if that will serve your purpose as well.

Contact Betty Booth At Nostalgic Motors. They will have them in stock

  10. I'm working on the wiring on my 1972 Avanti II and I have a question about the green with black tracer wire that goes from the passenger side solenoid terminal up into the wiring harness. I discovered that this green with black tracer wire had been cut about two or three feet into the harness and goes

nowhere. Where should this wire go and what is its function?

Thank you very much for your assistance!!!

    Terry

I believe that is the wire that goes to the coil to bypass the ignition resistor and supply 12 volts to the coil during starting.

  11. I saw yesterday that AMC's website is back up. No mention of Kelly anywhere on it, though there were pics of the Mexico facility. Does anyone know if Avanti been legally extricated from the Kellys, or why my post of this question was deleted yesterday?

    What Address are you using?
