  1. A while back someone asked me to send them a pic of my hood emblem. Since I just figured out how to do this, and just took a pic of my (Avanti) rear for previous post, I thought I'd post this here now.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Oops...... try again....

I want to know how you were able to attach a photo !

  2. They are using an electric fan, that along with the serpentine belt set up, freed up enough room to mount the air cleaner on the right fender where the origonal air intake was located.

I have tried to post photos but my attempts have been unsuccusfull. Is there some kind of trick to it?

  3. These ar the photos of the engine going into RQB3921. I had read thet the clearance for the TPI would be a problem and some had gone to the Edelbrock system because of it.

However the top of the TPI is actually 1" lower than the air cleaner that was on it.

  4. I would suggest going with a complete LT1, the lower intake plenum will allow dropping

the body to Stude height on Stude framed cars. The engine will make more HP and is

a much more reliable/troublefree setup. TPI is great, mostly, but avoid the MAF driven

units from the mid 80's, opt for the speed density ones from the late 80's early 90's. It

will require the same fuel pressure for either system = 40 psi over the 7 psi of the ECC.

This will require a different fuel tank/pump setup. If you are going through this much

hassle, use an LT1 and get the full benefits. The LS1 would be great, but requires more

work to get it to fit. LT1 is almost bolt in by relocating the A/C pump to the Vette spot.

I will be going with an electric fan set up. I am already using a 700r4. the rear ratios are 2.86 positraction.

I looked at going with GM but the Jasper has a better warentee Aluminum heads etc and at a lower cost.

I don't think the LT1 makes enough more power to be worth the extra cost.

  5. TPI is an excellent system to use. I think the headaches you'll run into are making sure you get the complete system from the donor car, plus you'll need an electric fuel pump. The ecu from the donor car may have to get a custom tuned chip to match the 305, transmission and rear end ratio specs of your Avanti. It's nothing that can't be done, but it may well take time and a lot of headaches getting things correct.

You might be better off by buying a standalone system like the Edelbrock Pro-Flo or Holley Commander EFI. They come complete with everything needed but are not inexpensive compared to getting used parts from a donor car.

I have the Edelbrock Pro-Flo on my '70 and am completely happy with how it runs. It took a bit of time to get it dialed in, but it does run excellent. There was also a bit of fabrication needed to fit up an air cleaner but there are lots of options to doing that.

Personally I'm going to go and change the whole thing. Jasper 350, aluminum heads stainless valves. TPI induction. 3yr 100k warntee incl. labor. with a serpentine belt system.

Lots more power an at the samt time probably better fuel economy depending of course on how it's driven!

  6. Hello All,

I am in Michigan and I'm in search of a R2, would like a 4speed if possible, don't want a junk pile, or a trailer queen. I have a few leads, one needs a engine etc. What is the range that cars have gone for recently? Any places I should look other than here , SDC, Fleabay? Any help?

    Thanks,

    Mark Meyer

If you haven't already, get in touch with Dan or Betty Booth at Nostalgic Motors. If there is one available they'll probably know where.

  7. Getting back to the dashboard, I can't recall any Avanti where the left gauge is not a clock.

Sounds like someone might have installed the voltmeter later.....of course, being a hand built car, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the voltmeter was per buyer's request, since there was probably a digital clock in the radio.

My 84 Touring Optioned coupe also has a voltmeter on the left. This is in addition to the ampmeter.

  8. It seems evident that Avanti is out of business.

I'd like to see those pictures. It would be helpful to track the last Avanti's from Morrow.

What a shame. After finally really getting it right they cease production just because Mike's in jail.

The 2007s were, in my opinion, the best since "63".

It would be nice if someone would pick it up.

I wonder how a levereged buy out would work?

  9. I need to change out my top and bottom radiator hoses on my 1983.

The top one is a two piece with a metal insert holding the filler cap.

I would like to know if there are any available at local parts houses that would work?

    Larry

I'm sure that the top hoses are only straight pieces of flex hose the proper length and diameter.

I think the lower can be done the same way.

  10. :) Mine is my daily driver. During bad weather I have an old El co thait I use.

If the weather permits I use my Harley And if it's real nice and I have someone special with me I use my E-TYPE Convertible.

I put about 5k miles on the Avanti each year,10k on the H D, 3k on the El Co and about 1k on the E.

  11. :o:( I'm new to the forum. Installed the Steeltech 12" kit on the front and the rear disk system on the back of my '78 Avanti II. My mechanic (Air Force moved me mid project) can't get the calipers to engage until the pedal is nearly bottommed out. He thinks the stock Master Cylinder doesn;t have enough volume to engage fully activate the pistons.

Any ideas? Is there a different Master Cylinder to try?

    Starting to grasp at straws!!

    Thanks for any help!!

I haven't seen it listed in any of the replies but I may have missed it.

But it sounds like the master cylinder wasn't properly "bench blead" prior to its instalation.

This must be done and done properly or the symptoms will be exactly as you describe.

  12. We've discussed this on the Avanti Yahoo groups board...regardless of what anyone might think of Mike Kelly, he's entitled to a presumption of innocence until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Let's treat him as such.

The fact is, Mike Kelly saved Avanti...twice from being nothing but a footnote in automotive history. Regardless of how the current situation shakes out, he deserves our thanks for what he has done for the marque. Let's show some support and hope for the best...for Mike Kelly and the future of Avanti Motors.

    Right On !

  13. Here are some pictures of the serpentine belt install on my SBC engine. I've driven a couple of hundred miles now and am very pleased with the results. That modern alternator works much better at charging at low speeds and there is plenty of room for the battery now. The only thing that you have to do that is not in the instructions is add a 50 ohm resister in one of the alternator wires to replace the missing idiot light. I still need to do some finishing wiring and move some of the air pump components. I havn't finished the A/C yet either, need to have shorter hoses made up.

It looks like the electric fan went a long way towards cleaning up the engine compartment!

  14. :) Although a little off the subject,I've got an 84 touring optioned coupe with the 305 HO engine,700R4 transmission, and a 286 rear end. Cruising around 80/85 mph nets 22/23 mpg.

    Charlie RQB-3921

I think Myers Studebaker has the adapter available for the GM auto tranny:

    Myer Studebaker Adapter

We have an '82 with a T56, SBC 350 and Holley spread bore 4bbl.  Highway mileage is close to 24 mpg.  I was just testing last week when the clutch m/c push rod broke 75 miles from home.  :(

In sixth gear the engine is turning 1200 rpm at 75 mph.

  15. I have a 1984 touring optioned coupe RQB-3921. Recently It has deveioped a serious leak that is dripping on my left knee. It seems to be coming from the headliner rather than the door or window seals.

From this I am assuming that the moon roof is probably leaking.

How difficult is it to correct this? Does the moon roof need to be romoved? Etc.

    Thanks Charlie RQB-3921
