  1. HAVING PURCHASED AN 1981 AVANTI II TO BASICALLY DRIVE AS AN EVERYDAY VEHICLE, I HAVE RUN INTO A SLIGHT PROBLEM WITH INSURANCE COVERAGE.  HAS ANYONE FOUND A SOURCE FOR INSURANCE THAT WOULD ADMIT TO THE VALUE OF THE CAR AND NOT JUST THE AGE WHEN DETERMINING VALUE FOR ACCIDENT COVERAGE.

Try Hagertys Classic & Collector car Insurance.

  2. HAVING JUST PURCHASED THIS 1981 AVANTI II, ACCORDING TO THE MANIFEST, THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH GMC 305 V8 ENGINE, HOWEVER, ALL THAT I HAVE FOUND TO DATE AS FAR AS PARTS/REPAIR MANUALS DEALS STRICTLY WITH THE BASIC 1963 STUDEBAKER AVANTI.  ANYONE KNOW HOW I MIGHT FIND WHAT GMC VEHICLE THAT SAME ENGINE/TRANSMISSION/POWER TRAIN OCCURRED, THAT I MIGHT PURSUE MAINTENANCE/PARTS MANUALS FROM GMC.

My 84 touring coupe uses the same 305HO that the Camero Z-28 used. The belts carb etc are all the same as the Z-28. I'll bet that your 81 is also. If in doubt get in touch with Dan Booth at Nostalgic motors.

  3. :)

I have diffiulity changing the lamps within the small confines of my front parking lights especially when they have become corroded inside their sockets. My fingers are large and I find it hard to obtain a grasp upon them in order to push and turn them. Does anyone know of a trick to make their removal and insertion a bit easier?

    Thanks,

Slipping a short piece of snug fitting heater hose over the bulb will facilate either operation.

Sprayineg both the bulb base and the socket with a liberal amount of WD-40 will go a long way towards preventing further corrosion and make the bulb easier to both install and remove.

  4. thanks for input.  The shop I am using (a specialty shop) says the bearing in the front housing has seized into the housing--not unusual.  the housing is pretty fragile and past attempts to press the bearing out (pound?) usually end with a broken housing.  which cannot be sourced anymore.  So he is soaking the assembly and working with it trying to separate the bearing from the housing.  If successful, the rebuild will take very little time.  all other parts are available.  I am just trying to anticipate a broken housing and looking around at the alternatives.  Thanks again.

To remove the bearing, use a dremel tool or other die grinder with a snall diameter cut off wheel. Cut the tnner race in two places and it should fall out. Then very carefully cut three or four slots across the outer race. Take care not to cut into the case. You should be able to take a small cold chisel and carefully break it out.

As a replacement any of the smaller Delco units with a built in voltage regulator should work.

I bought one for a Pontiac from Western Auto some years ago for $19.95 that incloded a lifetime warentee. Installed it in me Jaguar E-Type Has worked great ever since. Unfortunately Western Auto is no longer with us but any of the discount auto supplys have them at a reasonable price.
