  1. Below is my list that I based the guess of 68 on. Obviously I missed five. I had 68 until mfg said not to include the starter motor, so that knocked me down to 63. :( My memory of the PVC is that there is not a spring in it, but I'm too lazy to go pull one out and look at it. :)

Per the instructions, thermostatic type springs are not included, although I might argue that the spring in the cooling system thermostat is not the 'thermostatic' part - the wax pellet is. Also, I have left off the lower radiator hose spring since the hose didn't seem to fit the criteria of 'engine assembly'.

mfg, we are waiting to see your list................... ;)

    Rocker Shaft Springs 6

    Valve Springs 16

    Oil Pressure Relief 1

    Distributor Cap (center carbon) 1

    Fuel Pump 2

    Blower Belt Arm 1

    Throttle Return 2

    Blower 15

    Distributor Centrifugal Advance 2

    Distributor Vacuum Advance 1

    Alternator Brush 2

    Throttle Kicker 1

    PVC Valve ?????

    Carburetor --

    Vacuum Piston Spring 2

    Idle Cam Adj Screw 3

    Accelerator Pump 2

    Idle Adjust Screw 1

    Secondary Throttle Return 1

    Step Up Rod 2

    Throttle Flex 1

    Fast Idle Cam 1

Choke Shaft (3725 only) ? (decided not to include but probably should have)

    Total 63

  2. Well, if we aren't including the starter I've only come up with 63. And this number assumes we are not including the lower radiator hose (coil spring inside hose). So I'm going to say the correct answer is 68 figuring I missed five others.

Regardless of whether I'm right or wrong, at the end we all want to see your list mfg so we can critique it! :)

  3. Clarifying questions -

    1. are you considering a cutch disc and pressure plate as part of the "engine assembly"?
    2. are you considering the expansion tank as part of the "engine assembly"?
    3. are you considering a power steering pump as part of the "engine assembly"?

For items 2. and 3., they are both shown on the engine assembly picture on page 3 in the 'Engine' section of the Avanti Workshop Manual, so that is why I'm asking that.

Gotta make sure we all know the extent of the engine assembly.......... ;)

  4. Well, I was going to weigh in on this, but decided against it when I saw that Gary said false. Gary has forgotten more about Avantis than I know, for sure!

But..........assuming the '67 Avanti was using a Dana 44 with flanged axles (like the R3 Avantis received?), and seeing that the disc brake rear drums and the drum brake front drums were the same diameter........I'll go out on a limb here and say true.

  5. The '63 Lark had a 'modern' recirculating ball Saginaw steering box. The '63 Avanti and '63 Hawk had a somewhat antiquated Ross cam lever steering box.

The Avanti did have a rag joint installed in the shaft between the box and the steering wheel, but really don't see this as a 'standout' mechanical difference.

  6. Since the R1 was the base engine, why would there be an option to order it? It certainly wasn't a delete option...it was standard.

Excellent point Gunslinger! Obviously I didn't think about the R1 being standard on the Avanti;....... :P

  7. Had a set of NOS Avanti mufflers (not the quiet ones!) that I sold a few years ago, but don't remember the inlet and outlet diameters. But I'm going to say true - 2" inlet and 1-3/4" outlet since this is also the diameters on other Studebaker V8 exhaust systems (except '55 tailpipes which were 2").

  8. I'm in the process of digitizing photos, slides, and snippets of film strips related to my family's Packard/Studebaker/Mercedes dealerships for a possible Turning Wheels article. It just so happened that on the day mfg posted this trivia question, I had digitized the attached certificate!

As mentioned above, if anyone has details as to how this training was conducted (was it all done in South Bend, or where there various locations around the country that held this training), I sure would like to know. There are several color slides that I believe my Grandfather took during this training, and would sure like to determine what the location was. :)

  9. "Avanti Service Specialist".........

This is based on the attached certificate given to my Grandfather after completing his training.

  10. OK, I was waiting for someone else to answer this, but guess I'll have to take a stab at it. Following is a ridiculously long complicated answer to a relatively simple question but it's been a slow night :).

Assuming here that you are not including threaded oil gallery plugs or block drain plugs as "core plugs"........and that you are using the following definition for core plug: Core plugs are used to fill the sand casting core holes found on water-cooled internal combustion engines. They are also variously called frost plugs, freeze plugs, engine block expansion plugs, or Welch plugs.

So counting the "block" core plugs, there are three on each side down low near the pan rail, plus two on the backside of the block. So if you are talking strictly about engine block core plugs, there are more than four, more than six, more than seven, and sure can't identify thirteen. So assuming I'm missing one, I'll say nine must be the correct answer.

Of course, there are four (4) more "welch" plugs installed in the ends of the two rocker arm shafts, but these would not fit the definition of core plugs.

So I'll stick with my answer of nine, although I'm drawing a blank on where the ninth core plug is. :D

  11. One has to be the belt system - v belts instead of a cogged (gilmer) belt. I would guess that another may be the gigantic pulley setup that sticks way out on the front of the crankshaft. Third may be either no cold air intake or the inability to have factory a/c on the Avanti R2.
