Came across this today in my picture files, the 'museum' R4:

Paxton supercharger housings are made of....?......
1) pot metal (white metal).....2) steel.....or.....4) aluminum
Ed will probably say #3 is the right answer, but I'll try #4) aluminum (even though I've never had a Paxton myself, I've seen them polished up and they sure look like aluminum ).

I'm thinking the answer is true..........

What was the technical reason Studebaker chose to employ a 'dry type' engine air filltration system on their R2-R3 Avantis, as opposed to the 'wet' type?
An oil bath air filter did not fit the "hi performance image" of the Avanti either!
-
Datsun........specifically, the front fender markers from a 510. If I remember correctly, at this time Newman & Altman dealership was selling Datsuns.
-
Clearance issues between the O/D components (solenoid, governor) and the tunnel and x-member?
The Avanti wasn't being promoted as an 'economy' car, so how many would be ordered with overdrive? Would the sales potential offset the engineering time etc to adapt the trans, the electrical harness/components for the O/D, etc?
Basically, a three speed O/D did not fit the Avanti 'mystique' that Studebaker was promoting!
-
Opinion................there had been a number of supercharged (centrifugal and turbocharged) cars by the time the Avanti was introduced, so I don't think that was so newsworthy. While the speed records got press in 'enthusiast' magazines, the general public probably didn't care much. My opinion is that the disc brakes were the most newsworthy feature on the Avanti.

Hmm .....without looking it up, I "thought" the regular '63/'64 Lark & Hawk alternators were 35 amps, and the Avanti (and Jet Thrust Lark/Hawks) were 40amps. 🤔
-
Yes, true. The disc brake spindles have a different p/n than the drum brake Lark & Hawk spindles. The drum brake spindles can supposedly be made to work with factory discs, but they are not a "direct" interchange.

Crimped hose?
-
Pluggage at the back of the gauge where the line hooks up?
-
Fiberglass body?
-
#3, 4.50" bore spacing.
-
Hmmm. Less radio interference from the ignition system due to the shielding on the ignition wires?
Can't really think of anything else...................
-
Well, they did have uneven idle speed, but that's what the vacuum operated throttle kicker is supposed to take care of. So, I'll guess and say #1, collapsed floats.

Dave Thibeault should be able to help here Paul.
Dave doesn't have them, I talked to him. The .010" oversize are not made these days in the 3-9/16" bore 5/64x5/64x3/16 land width, so old stock is the only hope.

Right,...but same exterior color?.... and I'm thinking black vinyl interior instead of red?
The Car Life article says it was painted in a "Burgundy red exterior and matching red interior colors".

No, you are not correct.
The R4 car did not have the optional front and rear bumper guards, which the museum Daytona does have.
In addition, the R4 car had a 'full package' grille badge (although it was installed in a curious higher position than all other '64 Lark grille badges that I have seen), while the museum Daytona does not have a 'full package' grille badge (at least, it did not have in 1988 when I took a number of pictures of the car when visiting the museum).

Wanted to buy: a set of 224/259/289 V8 Piston Rings, cast iron, in .010" oversize.
Please either message me thru this forum, or email me at: r1lark@aol.com (letter "r", number "one", lark)

Happy New Year All!!
Does anyone know of any vendors that carry polyurethane bushings for the upper & lower control arms? I've only been able to locate plain rubber at Studebaker International. My Avanti is a 77. Thx!!
Steve
Russ at studebakerparts.com carries delrin bushings: https://www.studebakerparts.com/studebakerparts/store/s/agora.cgi?p_id=334&xm=on

Radio interference?

I'm not convinced that the fan shroud was part of the Lark High Performance Package. I'll try to dig out the list of the package components.
