Your "clue" makes me think of Mr. Ed, the horse from the TV show that was sponsored by Studebaker.

I've got to give this one to studegary:)....... Although the quote has nothing to do with the Mr. Ed TV show, Gary did mention Studebaker Corp......................the "who", "it", or "thing" is/was the Studebaker Corp......The quote came from one of their Avanti ads!
