Joan Posted August 16, 2017 Report Posted August 16, 2017 Does the chrome ignition shield have a purpose other being decorative? Can you tell me the reason it is there.
64studeavanti Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 I believe it was to reduce interference "static" in radio reception. Could accomplish same with suppressant spark plug cables and resister plugs.
studegary Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 It is used to suppress RF (radio frequency) interference. The fiberglass body does not do this as a steel body would. In other words, it is for the radio.
Joan Posted August 17, 2017 Author Report Posted August 17, 2017 Thank-you. I thought that might be the case.
PackardV8 Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 And mostly for the AM radio reception. Important in '63, but not so much today. FWIW, the interference would also make noise on the radio of the car next to an Avanti, occasionally causing their smiles to become frowns. jack vines
StudeNorm Posted September 1, 2017 Report Posted September 1, 2017 (edited) Early 'Vettes had the same shielding for the same reason... RF noise suppression. Edited September 1, 2017 by StudeNorm
