Avanti 79
Hi All, I have a scraping sound coming from the right front brake when I apply the brakes. I’ve put new pads on, however, the noise was there even before I installed new pads. Everything looks ok and car seems to stop fine. I haven’t had to brake hard since installing the new pads, and I’m assuming all will be fine when I do. The noise isn’t there all the time, it kind of comes and goes. Before installing the new pads, I repacked the bearings and they seemed to be working properly. Additionally, the rotors are in very good shape and showing very little wear if any. There are no deep grooves in the rotors, so I’m at a loss, as to what is going on. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. Mel
On one car I had, eons ago, one of the bearing races was a bit loose in the drum. The bearing had never seized so I don't know why the race was loose but ... Might be worth a look. Good luck.
Avanti 79
Thanks for your response. I’m not sure how to check it. Can you please tell what I’m looking for? Thank you. Edited Thursday at 02:10 AM by Avanti
Mel
Take the rotor off and clean all the grease out of the areas, inside the rotor hub, where the bearings rest and see if one of the beveled rings (race) inside seems loose or can be wiggled around at all. You stated above that you repacked the bearings but if you ascertain the existing races are pressed in tightly, I'd consider having the races replaced and install new bearings. Did the noise start suddenly after you did any previous work, hit a pothole, etc.? Is it particularly prominent during a right or left turn? Sounds to me like a bearing/race issue. Good luck. Keep us posted. Thanks.
Avanti 79
Thanks. I’ve cleaned the hubs before I repacked the bearings and replaced the seals. No the noise didn’t appear suddenly and is not a result of any previous work. It has been there for a while, it comes and goes. There is no prominent turning left or right. I can hear it when I first start to drive and other times when I brake. Thanks so much. I appreciate your help.
Footer
I get an occasional squeak out of my brakes after repacking the wheel bearings. I replaced the shims the way they came out. I bought a set of Turner brakes for it but don’t have them installed, hoping that will alleviate the noise. Mike
mfg
Sometimes the inner dust shield somehow gets slightly bent and will occasionally scrape at the spinning disc on turns.
