Alan Blalock Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 Today,s stupid question is " which direction do I turn my distributor to retard the timing?" Sorry 289 Avanti R1
64studeavanti Posted May 11, 2022 Report Posted May 11, 2022 Rotor turns CCW, so turning the distributor CCW should retard.

mfg Posted May 11, 2022 Report Posted May 11, 2022 Studebaker V8's are somewhat unique in that they utilize timing gears as opposed to the 'more common' timing chain set. The gears reverse the direction of the camshaft (compared to direction of crankshaft rotation) and consequently reverse distributor rotation.
64studeavanti Posted May 11, 2022 Report Posted May 11, 2022 Mopar use chains and also have CCW rotation.

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing...but I can't picture how a chain driven camshaft could turn in opposite direction of crankshaft? (perhaps you mean distributor rotation?) 64studeavanti Posted May 11, 2022 Report Posted May 11, 2022 The context of this thread is distributor rotation.

True, however, as I introduced camshaft rotation into this conversation, your second post became a bit blurred! (unclear) Edited May 12, 2022 by mfg Added "unclear"
rhusak Posted May 13, 2022 Report Posted May 13, 2022 The rule I always used learned many years ago is.. Turning the distributor in direction of the vacuum line advances it opposite retards.. Best way is to use a timing light as always.. Ron
