An interesting footnote to the "safety bumper" is that a former Avanti Motors employee came up to me at the last IM that was held in South Bend. He related that he and another employee were pulled off the line one day by Mr. Hardig to "test" the safety bumpers by driving into one of the building's exterior walls at 5mph with a couple of the cars.
