mfg Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 There was a depature from normal Studebaker passenger car production methods found in Studebaker Avanti window glass...what is that difference?
Gunslinger Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 My SWAG answer is the swing out rear side glass instead of either fixed or wind-down.
Avanti83 Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 How about curved not straight side window glass?
mfg Posted September 16, 2014 Author Report Posted September 16, 2014 My SWAG answer is the swing out rear side glass instead of either fixed or wind-down. Well no..... as you'd know, the '53-'61 Hawk coupes had swing out 1/4 windows.
mfg Posted September 16, 2014 Author Report Posted September 16, 2014 How about curved not straight side window glass? You hit on it EXACTLY!...Curved side glass was a departure.
plwindish Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 Wasn't the Avanti the first American car with curved side windows?
Gunslinger Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 No...I'm not sure which car was the first but I know the 1961-63 Lincoln Continental did. My dad had a '62 Continental and it definitely had curved side glass. I believe in '64 the Continental returned to flat side glass. Maybe if Studebaker had used flat side glass in the Avanti they wouldn't have such problems with window alignment and water leaks. If the car had been designed with doors like the '63 Corvette coupe that are fully framed a lot of alignment and leak issues could have been avoided as well...but that's just speculation.
