What unique feature did Loewy add to his briefcase?
-
What's the reason Studebaker gave for changing to a 4 pole starter motor on the Avanti?
-
The factory supplied a kit that included a new shift lever, lever pivot pin, nylon bushings, spring washer and spacer washer.
That would be the correct answer. A factory service letter details the required parts and procedure. I wonder how many Avantis underwent the fix.
-
No takers on this one, so here's the condensed version of the story.
Loewy wanted to impress NASA officials with the comfort and flexibility of his space suit design so he made a visit. He was driven in his Lincoln to NASA. His Avanti was driven behind the Lincoln. Before arriving at the gate, he got out of the Lincoln, hopped into the space suit, and got behind the wheel of his Avanti so he could make a grand entrance at NASA and show how easy it was to move freely in the space suit.

Raymond Loewy was a master at public relations and new the value of traveling in the right social circles. What two Loewy designs came about as the result of Lowey and Jackie Kennedy’s friendship?
-
What was the factory recommended fix for a “noisy floor 4 speed shifter assembly” (rattle or buzz) on the ’63 Avanti?
-
Regular White Sidewalls.
You got it! Basic blackwalls were standard, basic white walls were an option as were blackwall and whitewall Nylon tires.
-
According to sales brochures...
6.70-15 Standard
6.70-15 Nylon 500
6.70-15 Nylon 500 blackwall
In the Avanti accessories pamphlet that came with the owners manual, Dunlop tires were also listed as an upgrade accessory.
Partially correct. Two out of three ain't bad if by "6.70-15 Nylon 500" you mean 6.70-15 Nylon WHITEWALL. Still looking for the 3rd optional tire choice as indicated in literature provided to dealers.
-
6.70-15
Correct. Too easy, right?
-
What was the original Avanti tire size?
-
What were the three optional tire choices when ordering a ’63 Avanti?

I can think of several...Air Force One paint scheme...the Coke bottle...the Exxon logo...the forward ID stripe on Coast Guard vessels...even more most likely.
The Coke bottle is questionable, but the paint scheme on Air Force One puts you in the Winners Circle.

Score another one for you! I'm going to have to go to the über trivia questions in an attempt to stump you.

What’s the recommended fix for the common problem of an Avanti that takes excessive cranking time to start?
-
What often seen (worldwide exposure, TV, movies, print publications) Loewy design continues in regular use today and is virtually unchaged in over 50 years?
-
There were five choices for '63. For '64 models you could have any carpet color and combination you wanted as long as it was black.
Five it is....or was.

Acrylic lacquer paint
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner! Nice job, Lew.
-
Lacquer paint....
Yes, but can you be a little more specific about what kind of lacquer?
-
What’s the technical term for the type of paint originally used on all Avantis?
-
How many carpet color choices for the ’63 Avanti?

Gloyd is the name used in the source I was referencing, too. Just didn't want to annoy the OP, so I went with his spelling. I wonder what he "misappropriated".It wasn't "Gloud" Richards but Gloyd Richards. He was fired for "misappropriating" company equipment.
-
I'm not sure he was a truck driver unless it was for the company. I think he was a union leader (or agitator) that tried to block Egbert from entering the plant. A scuffle ensued but Egbert played it down as nothing. The guy I believe was later fired for cause by Studebaker.
Most of us have had an Eddie Haskell in their lives...maybe Richards was Egbert's.
Yes, we do all seem to have an Eddie of some sort. The newspaper picture of Egbert being booked by the police included a caption stating Gloud was a truck driver for Studebaker. I'm sure his actions were career limiting.

Gray.
Correct. We must both read the same factory documents. I wonder why they didn't list Gray for rear belts - can't be much difference in front & rear seat belts.
Lowey and the Kennedys

Right on both items. When JFK became president, he "inherited" Eisenhower's fleet of aircraft. Kennedy didn't like the regal look of the paint scheme that the Air force proposed for his long range Boeing 707 ( red paint, metallic gold highlights, "United States of America" in big block letters), so he listened to Jackie and who suggested that Loewy be contacted to come up with a better design.
Loewy's design exposed the polished aluminum fuselage on the bottom side, and used two blues; a slate-blue associated with the early republic and the presidency, and a more contemporary cyan to represent the present and future. The presidential seal was added to both sides of the fuselage near the nose, a large American flag was painted on the tail, and the sides of the aircraft read "United States of America" in all capital letters.
The same paint scheme transitioned nicely to the 747s, currently used by President Obama, when they replaced the 707s in 1990.
