I had the same issue with the belts on my '78.  I took them to a local auto upholstery shop and they shortened them for a small charge.  Alternately, if you google "auto seat belts" you will find numerous vendors who can supply the belt buckle in various anchor lengths.  You may want to consider going to the semi-rigid type which eliminates a lot of fumbling to hook up.

I like the idea of going to a semi-rigid type but not sure which ones would connect to my existing belts. Maybe i should just replace both sides?

I have the buckle side of the seat belt that is so long that the shoulder harness rides up high on my chest instead of at my waist. Anyone else have this? Is there  shorter buckle side of the belt available?

Are the only VIN numbers on 1980 and earlier Avantis just the RQA and RQB numbers? When did they start using the VIN numbers like you see on cars today?
