Yeah, I can see quite a bit of work, especially on a car with good paint. As far as the TN car, I've lost interest at that price. I may make an offer if it doesn't sell though.

I think that for a little lower, it could be a good buy.

I do know of a 1979 in Ellijay,  Georgia that is for sale for around $20K. Dark blue, recaro seats.

  2. Well, I think it might be somewhat complex. Also, you would need to add the turn signals to the fenders to look original on a chrome bumper car.

Without pulling a front bumper to see what if any body changes were made, it is hard to tell but i know that on other brands of cars there were always subtle unseen changes.

Did you give up on the Tennessee car?

I know. I took my clock and other gauges apart to clean the glass. Went well but took a lot of time. How it the ring attached to the new clock? Not crimped?

I never looked. I will take a look tomorrow, weather permitting

Would it be possible to put the old hands, dial and ring on the new clock?

I don't think that would be easy. Haven't tried. My experience with clocks is that while many seem to be identical, there are almost always slight differences.

Since both have red hands, it might be cool just to change the dial.

The ring on these old clocks is crimped on and you have to be very careful uncrimping it from the case so that you do not damage it too much. I managed to get mine apart but it took a lot of patience. They were not made to be taken apart and repaired in my opinion

  5. Did you see it on Bob Johnstones page? Looks like it sat in a shed in Alabama for 15 years until 2017. The damage to the top of the left front fender opening is old based on that. Ad says the seats were redone but they do not look that way in the photos. Not sure why they removed the rear glass to install a new tank(Hopefully a stainless steel one) as that can be done with the back seat removed. I see potential

There was the Avanti LSC which was an Avanti stretched by something like 9" or so.  Besides extra legroom in the rear it was equipped with a television mounted on the rear console.  I don't know the numbers built but it wasn't a huge number.

I happen to stop by the factory when the first LSC was being built...still in a prototype stage more or less.

Ever drive one. Different chassis than the others?

  7. Were some 1988 Avantis longer than others? Some look to be the original length while others are longer. Why is that? Which drive better or is there a difference. Wondering if there is a much more modern feel driving one than an earlier Avanti II.

Sorry for my ignorance on these later cars

    Thanks

You could try clock works (clockwks.com) for a conversion. Otherwise, a quick search brings up several DIY kits

Great website but I only paid about $35 for this clock and conversions cost a lot more. I will keep it on my list of parts suppliers for future reference for other cars.

Even the movement kits that I found are around $90

    Thanks

How about sending the old one off for a quartz conversion?

Not sure where or how i would do that. Do you know? Is it expensive? I could put a quartz movement in it if I could find one

  10. I tried to get the old clock going. It would run for a while and quit. I think the spring in it just does not have enough strength any more because even after cleaning and reassembly, it was sporadic.

So, it did a little searching and found one that would drop right in with minor wiring adaptations. In fact the original wires are still intact not that I think I will ever find an original clock that works.

This one even  has red lighting and is very visible.

We shall see how well it works long term but for now, it looks almost like the original and I can see it at night!!

Wish my other gauges were that visible. I have tried both white and red LEDs and they still suck at night even though they look bright in the attached photos which make the clock look almost too bright which it is not.

Here is a link if interested. It is also available from several vendors on Ebay but ships from China.

Thanks, that's what I am hoping. It's  near Murfreesboro TN and on eBay. Anyone here close?

I have been following this car on Ebay and wondering about the rear windshield. I get up there with my work but do not have any trips planned right now. That could change any time though

With a computer? Does not the computer control idle? If the computer does control the idle, I would say a temp sensor fault. If the computer has no function for the idle, it is indeed the carb. When your "mechanic can't figure it out", I would suggest finding an other mechanic.

Well, since we don't know any details other than that the motor is not original, who knows what else is on it. It might be all carbed or something else.

On the passenger side of the block toward the front of the engine where the bottom of the head meets the block there will be a pad with numbers/letters stamped into it unless the block has been surfaced. Those will help decode the source of the engine. Those plus a picture of the carb/injection setup will help.

Good points. Looking forward to pictures and answers.
