Will be interesting to hear if there is a noticeable difference in heat and noise. Looks like you did a good job installing that first layer.

Looks like it really opend up the front of the motor removing the standard fan. Nice job

I'm getting my 87 reupholstered. Leather is now costing over $600/hide and I'm told the Avanti will need 5.5 hides for seats and door panels. Does anyone know what the front seats are from? Someone thought they were from a Caddilac (?)
Don't know what they came from, but I just had two seats redone for my motorhome at the airport interior guy. He used aircraft approved wool and vinal to replace the "fake leather" they were made with. Turned out looking 100% better than they were and was a lot less expensive than going to the auto interior guy. Hope your able to get what your looking for.

Just got the latest Bring a Trailer post and a 1982 is listed. Just in case anyone happens to be looking for one. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1982-avanti-2/

DCS Computer Series 3, have to ask what is this? What year is it installed in?

WOW, your writting is supurb, very discriptive and factual. Such a shame you got such a screwed over car from the dealership that protrayed that car as something special. Well it was special, a real basket case. Just not told to you. Hope the new owner can and will contiune the rebuild and show us here how it turns out.

You 'nailed' it!
Quite a few years ago I broke a drive shaft and was surprised to find that cardboard inside, wondered why and an older guy said they absorb noise and vibration? Sounded good at the time.

Driveshaft for sound absorbsion

I just keep using leather conditioner, as we almost never put the top up. On some really sunny days i do leave a towel over the two front seats as they get too hot to sit on.

Wow, I have no clue on what the value would be, but the photos show a LOT of needed repairs and time investment. You might just list it on some car site, or like Craig's list, Market Place, or even Ebay and let the market tell you what it is going to sell for.

Thanks for the summary...that's exactly what I was looking for. 3:73 it is!! Where are you getting the Speedo adjustment parts from?
I don't know, the fellow who did my work was in contact with a service that builds these converters, will check and let you know.

Yes, got it back yesterday and have had it out 3 times now with the top down. The 305 is awake now, not anywhere near the neck snapping spin the tires out of a dead stop something with more horsepower and torque would do, but it is now more fun to drive. The new 3:73 has increased the overall rpm's by a good bit, runs about 1,900/2,000 rpm at about 60ish. The speedo is off by about 30 mph reading high, but we ordered a speedo correction unit to adjust the overage and it should be here next week we hope. Not a big deal to install so that will then let me know for sure what speed I'm driving without having the phone GPS reading for me. I was all gung ho to pull that 305 and drop in a 350 or 383 to make the car more fun. With this gear change I might hold off and see if I really need that extra ummph.

OK just filled it from empty on my 1991 Conv. 16.5 gallons is all she will hold. So looking at how they constructed this tank it seems from what the factory design was they chopped quite a bit out of the capacity.

This has turned into a real cluster...The fellow doing the work I think is in over his head? It is not a S-10 axle, but a Caprice as I had thought. It has coil springs and 4 link system. The tone ring that was switched from the orignal axle pinon to the new 3:73 gear set should not have been used. So today a correct ring was ordered to correct the problem we would have had with the ABS system. So still without my car,. It does look good up on his rack. He will take apart the new ring and pinon set he installed to replace the tone ring. Said he will save the new fluid and modifier he has in the axle and reuse it. At least I'm not being charged for the additional labor, just the new ring. The saga continues.

Motor/Alldata Repair is showing 1991 Chevrolet Caprice as having coil spring rear suspension.
Good luck,
Jim Wood
Exactly, that was what I expected to be there, but not on this car. So after trying to find a exact duplicate GM rear axle it comes up as a S-10. Now the issue is getting the speedo to read correctly, as it reads speeds two ways one off the transmission spinning and 2, off the tone ring for the ABS brakes inside the rear axle housing. Alwys seems like a lot of small things make a job so much harder to do. Along with the two different U joints types and sizes, a Caprice front joint at the transmission and the S-10 at the rear.

When I had the strip shop we used low pressure blasting with acrylic plastic pieces to clean the bottoms of fiberglass cars to a totally clean, smooth finish so the folks repainting had a nice surface to paint. Doing it your way is very time consuming, but satisfying to see what is under all that goop.

I was under the impression the complete drive line under my 1991 Conv was from a 1991 Caprice. So while in the process of ordering parts to upgrade the rear axle ratio and adding a limited Slip, Posi unit we find out what I thought I had I don't. Seems the rear axle is out of a S-10 pick up truck, not a Caprice. It has 4 link as opposed to leaf springs. Both ends of the drive shaft U joints are not the same, front is square, rear are oblong. The frame was cut midship and a section removed to shorten the frame to fit as that is not what I was told, got the impression they chopped off the frame of the Caprice at the rear. Then they had to cut the driveshaft and weld it together, of course not straight! So that is off and now being recut and welded and balanced. What a mixed bag of misc parts they used.

hi Stacey,
That would be great. I can't put more than 13 gallons in mine.
Stopped into see how my car's repairs were going. In talking to the Tech he said that gas tank looked totally cobbled together to fit into the space provided. I expect either by the end of the week or early next week to have all the stuff done so I can go fill her up and let you know what mine will hold as far as gallons go.

Still waiting for my car to be completed. so have not gone and topped off the gas tank yet. But will post once I filler er up.

I am currently driving back to home in Az from Alabama in the motorhome. Should be back there I think Sunday and will see if the car is done so i can pick it up Monday. Will let you know the seat of the pants impression as to if it was a worth while investment. I have high hopes to see/feel the thrill of drivng it in a more spirtited fashion. It was/is a nice car, just a dog.

Do you have the 200r4 trans.? What gear ratio are you considering? Those that I've spoken with recommend 3.55 or 3.73 for a noticeable improvement in acceleration.
I think? it is the 700R4, but might be the 200R4, not sure, other than it is 4 speed auto. Seems I have a 2:28 rear open gear now, as we speak going with a 3:73 posi unit. I figured at first i was going to just replace the 305 and go with a 350, but got talked to do it in steps. Gear first and see how I like it and if need be, then new motor. Where we live the car is never run at high speeds, maybe 60ish is as fast as we run. Normally all town cruising. Do not care what amount of fuel it uses, fill it up when it gets low, almost never has the top up, so it is a fun convertible to beebop around town.
-
What motor is in your car? I have a 305 in my 1991 and am in the middle of switching rear axle gears for a bit more performance. Next step is motor work or motor replacement.
-
What was the outcome on the carpet pricing and how he would would go about making a replacement? I would consider having mine replaced.
-
Looking at my tank it appears they took the original tank, cut it and modified it to fit up into a small area. They might have removed a large enough section that removed a few gallons? It is a real odd shape now. They did reuse the factory in tank fuel pump at least.
