I would think that any P/S pump from a '58-up Studebaker passenger car (Bendix P/S) with a 259 or 289 V8 engine would fit your Avanti....brackets and all.
(Except for '57-'58 'South Bend Packards').

Definitely a Studebaker Avanti Powershift unit.
-
I know they were used at bottom of interior door panels in mid 70's Cordobas and Chargers, but try finding one of those at the boneyard these days!!
-
Kind of hard to describe how a healthy Paxton blower should turn over!.....Although there should be a fair amount of resistance when turning the pulley by hand,
it's important that the pulley turns smoothly, with absolutely no abrupt 'stops' or 'ratcheting' while rotating it.
Any roughness whatsoever means the supercharger needs to come apart for service!

I think if I was faced with this issue, I might be looking at improvement rather than replacement. Consider
cutting open the door and installing a crash bar into it, that supports and door and hinges. One thing that
bothers me about my Avanti is how it would (or wouldnt) fair in a side impact.
I cut apart a 1994 Firebird door a few years back that had been t-boned by an SUV, the door was almost
torn apart, but the crash bar was there. It had gone from straight to curved and now I use it as my prybar.
The car was hit so hard it went into a spin and hit a center margin, breaking off both rear axles.
I am sure the passenger would have been killed if the seat had been occupied, but imagine what it would
have looked like WITHOUT!
Tom
I understand what you mean Tom, About the only metal inside a Stude Avanti door is the window regulator!!

"Find of the day" for sure!!...What a nice looking car at a very reasonable price!
-
This Avanti is interesting.....looks like it was retrofitted with A/C years ago, which, of course, is unusual to find on an R2!
The frame would have to be nice and solid for me to part with 7K,...and then the worry of not having a clear title would begin!!
-
Great story!!...and good luck with your 'new' Avanti.....I'm sure it will bring you many happy memories!!
-
I've always felt that Studebaker Avantis received a higher level of 'pre delivery care' than other Studebaker passenger cars...but ANYTHING could have occurred to that Avanti before your Father bought it (causing some paint damage which required re-finishing)
It's entirely plausible the selling dealer's body shop did some touch up work to your family's Avanti.
-
I suspect Raymond's Avanti was equipped with the optional 'quiet tone' exhaust system, and he just needed to hear that 'R' engine ROAR once in a while!
-
After you perform the alignment procedure to your satisfaction, simply drill two proper size new holes through the bellhousing and block flange and tap them into place.

Answer.....FALSE!...The Granatellis had a manual control rigged into this Avanti's console which allowed the automatic transmissions shift points to be adjusted by the driver!
-
plwindish says FALSE!.....any other thoughts on this one?
-
Concerning the Cad/Avanti....The Granatellis fitted a custom remote control into the console of this Avanti which operated the twin exhaust cutouts from the driver's seat.....True?
-
false, i think it was overheating
You're 'Right on the Money' arkus!.....Apparently, overheating was chronic with this car.
-
The Granatellis did a great job once installing a 429 CI Cadillac V8 into a Studebaker Avanti.....but that Avanti had one major problem after the install,...and that problem was the breakage of rear axle shafts from all the extra engine torque........True?
-
I agree with Norm.
-
I say yes,....PPG.................However, nowadays aftermarket glass can come from several different glass manufacturers for the Avanti.
-
Great video!...And it's real nice to see one of the nine factory R3 Avantis on its way back to life!!....Kudos to Brad Bez!
-
I'd say most any Stude vendor would have that part....If not NOS then good used.
I'd recommend Dave Thibeault (Mass).....Tel# 978-897-3158

If Gunslinger's answer is incorrect, (and it probably isn't), could it be after the move to Youngstown? ( 1987 production)
-
Looks impressive!
-
Over the years, a previous owner probably swapped out your Avanti's worn out original dual point distributor for a 'Non R' engine's single point type.
For all normal driving, the single point type distributor is more than adequate, and at tune-up time much easier to work on!...I'd leave it be!

Yes, I'm afraid that red/black carpet at the bottom of your interior door panels really doesn't belong there.
It should be fawn/black.
( It looks nice to me though, and if you already have the matching floor carpet,...I'd go with it!)
Choke electrical circuit for 82 Avanti II
in 1965-83 Avanti
Posted
I had this problem in my '83 Avanti 'everyday driver', and it turned out to be a defective choke relay....available at a GM parts counter....I think I can get you the part number if you need it.
