  1. Kind of hard to describe how a healthy Paxton blower should turn over!.....Although there should be a fair amount of resistance when turning the pulley by hand,

it's important that the pulley turns smoothly, with absolutely no abrupt 'stops' or 'ratcheting' while rotating it.

Any roughness whatsoever means the supercharger needs to come apart for service!

  2. I think if I was faced with this issue, I might be looking at improvement rather than replacement. Consider

cutting open the door and installing a crash bar into it, that supports and door and hinges. One thing that

bothers me about my Avanti is how it would (or wouldnt) fair in a side impact.

I cut apart a 1994 Firebird door a few years back that had been t-boned by an SUV, the door was almost

torn apart, but the crash bar was there. It had gone from straight to curved and now I use it as my prybar.

The car was hit so hard it went into a spin and hit a center margin, breaking off both rear axles.

I am sure the passenger would have been killed if the seat had been occupied, but imagine what it would

    have looked like WITHOUT!

I understand what you mean Tom, About the only metal inside a Stude Avanti door is the window regulator!!

  3. I've always felt that Studebaker Avantis received a higher level of 'pre delivery care' than other Studebaker passenger cars...but ANYTHING could have occurred to that Avanti before your Father bought it (causing some paint damage which required re-finishing)

It's entirely plausible the selling dealer's body shop did some touch up work to your family's Avanti.

  4. The Granatellis did a great job once installing a 429 CI Cadillac V8 into a Studebaker Avanti.....but that Avanti had one major problem after the install,...and that problem was the breakage of rear axle shafts from all the extra engine torque........True?

  5. Over the years, a previous owner probably swapped out your Avanti's worn out original dual point distributor for a 'Non R' engine's single point type.

For all normal driving, the single point type distributor is more than adequate, and at tune-up time much easier to work on!...I'd leave it be!
