mfg Posted May 11, 2019 Report Posted May 11, 2019 What was "old man Salay's" behind the scenes connection with Avanti 'R' engines...... and the Studebaker Engineering Department?
r1lark Posted May 11, 2019 Report Posted May 11, 2019 Is this the guy (was his first name Mick or Mike or something like that?) that did high performance machine work for Studebaker Engineering?

r1lark Posted May 11, 2019 Report Posted May 11, 2019 To follow up, here supposedly is a picture of Mike (did find out it was Mike Salay) in the bottom left picture, the guy on the left according to John Shanahan:
mfg Posted May 11, 2019 Author Report Posted May 11, 2019 Wow!....thanks much Paul for those pictures and interesting article!!
brad Posted May 12, 2019 Report Posted May 12, 2019 And the rest of the story. The car sat many more years, and the engine wasn't reunited until Randy Rapp got it several owners later. Here also is a link to the fire up in the now restored car.
mfg Posted May 12, 2019 Author Report Posted May 12, 2019 You have to hand it to John Shanahan for having the foresight to see the value and rarity of R5089, and going to the trouble (and financial expense) to save this Avanti and its very special powertrain. (Both could have easily been destroyed or junked!!) We owe a debt to early pioneers of the AOAI like Mr. Shanahan!!
