A seldom seen item, designed as an addition to a Studebaker Avanti's interior 'console', was introduced by Studebaker after '64 Avanti serial number R5400....What was that item?

I will guess a compass.

The transparent shift cover for those cars with an automatic transmission.  It was after R5400...the parts manual states "after approximately 5400 units" which would be R6400 if Avanti production had continued.
