mfg Posted January 13, 2018 Report Posted January 13, 2018 The highest (lowest numerically) rear axle ratio offered by Studebaker for R3 Avanti models was 2.79......True?
mfg Posted January 14, 2018 Author Report Posted January 14, 2018 30 minutes ago, lschuc said: False.... it was 3:07 Sorry Lew, according to printed Studebaker info, 307 wasn't the highest ratio available for the R3's.
mfg Posted January 14, 2018 Author Report Posted January 14, 2018 However, Lew's "false" is the CORRECT answer to this question!.....Now, does anyone have an idea of what really was the highest rear axle ratio available with the R3 engine option?
lschuc Posted January 15, 2018 Report Posted January 15, 2018 Yes, FALSE, the Highest ratio, 3.07:1 (lowest numerically) is the correct answer, as MFG says, above. The LOWEST ratio (Highest numerically) ratio available for an R3 was 4:55. The first of 9 production R3 models came from the factory with a 4.55:1 rear axle ratio. It was a drag race from stoplight to stoplight!
brad Posted January 15, 2018 Report Posted January 15, 2018 2.87 is the highest ratio available. none were ordered.
mfg Posted January 15, 2018 Author Report Posted January 15, 2018 To be clear, although Lew's FALSE response was correct, according to a letter from Studebaker Corp dated 1/8/63, ALL the above ratio replys are INCORRECT! Any more thoughts on what the highest available Avanti R3 axle ratio was?
mfg Posted January 17, 2018 Author Report Posted January 17, 2018 ANSWER... According to a letter from Studebaker dated 1/8/63, axle ratios offered with the R3 'engine package' ranged from a high of 2.53 to a low of 5.38 (WOW! talk about a stump-puller!)
