mfg
Why did Studebaker engineers decide to design a new flat top piston to increase the compression ratio in their Avanti 'R' engines, as opposed to making modifications to the cylinder head combustion chamber? studegary
It was cheaper and easier to have the vendor make different pistons than to change a head casting and its machining.

Sorry no, that isn't the reason.
r1lark
Since they had to make other piston modifications anyway (to allow for increased piston speeds and loads in a higher performance engine), they included the change to a flat top piston.
