All nine 'production line' Studebaker Avanti R3's were actually assembled as R2 cars, then pulled off of the line and converted to R3 specs by Studebaker engineering.....True?

Yes, False.... and there was actually an order for a 10th R3 Avanti when the factory shutdown was announced in December 1963.   There were a number of Avanti production orders in line for completion and the factory allowed the completion of 10 or 20 still on the production floor, ending at the last one, the 9th R3 now in the Crawford Museum.
