mfg Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 What is the 'standout' mechanical difference between a '63 Studebaker Avanti steering system, (manual OR power), and a '63 Studebaker Lark or Hawk steering system?
r1lark Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 The '63 Lark had a 'modern' recirculating ball Saginaw steering box. The '63 Avanti and '63 Hawk had a somewhat antiquated Ross cam lever steering box. The Avanti did have a rag joint installed in the shaft between the box and the steering wheel, but really don't see this as a 'standout' mechanical difference.
mfg Posted October 29, 2015 Author Report Posted October 29, 2015 Good point on the steering box Paul...but they both served the same basic function......... You hit the 'nail on the head' with RAG JOINT.....a major change, (IMHO), from the solid steering shafts of the past!
brad Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 You can still be impaled by the column shaft. I know of at least one Avanti fatality from a steering shaft.
