mfg Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 Why is 10/1/63 an important date in the history of the Studebaker Avanti?
regnalbob Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 Avanti Red paint discontinued and replaced with Avanti Maroon. Metallic Red Vinyl discontinued and replaced with Claret Red Vinyl.

Any other thoughts concerning this date?

I believe R5642 did have an all ‘Metallic Red Vinyl’ interior… but that discontinued color was special ordered… a personal preference of the original purchaser of the car.
mfg Posted May 15 Author Report Posted May 15 Studebaker Corporation, in 1963, apparently issued two different ‘start’ dates for unsold 1963 models to be titled as 1964 models…. The dates are 9/1/63 and 10/1/63….The jury is out, and I’m asking Ron to check into this.
Nelson Posted May 18 Report Posted May 18 I don’t remember the PO for that car saying “sold rush” but I might be wrong. It was an R3 so would think they had to be ordered special.

Apparently, R5642 was ordered the way it was… a very expensive Studebaker Avanti… to try to recoup some of the investment capital loaned to a family member in an attempt to prop up a Studebaker dealership he opened. After Studebaker ended car production, ordering this car was apparently one way for the loaner to get some of his money back…. By ordering a new ‘very expensive’ Studebaker… at no charge.
