paul shuffleburg Posted March 7 Report Posted March 7 I have a flyer for 63 Avanti's and it list the five available colors. I have R-4499 and there is no final assy. date, it just says "RUSH SOLD". I was wondering when they started painting them black. I know they only painted 115 cars black.

Hi Paul… someone more knowledgeable may chime in on this, but in my opinion ‘Avanti Black’ was a legitimate option from the ‘get go’…. only to be discontinued, and then brought back as an extra cost option. If you’re asking what was the serial # of the first production Stude Avanti painted black… I haven’t a clue! Paul S, by the way, owns a gorgeous ‘Avanti Black’ ‘63 Avanti R1 Edited March 7 by mfg Spell.
Mark L Posted March 8 Report Posted March 8 (edited) BTW, "RUSH SOLD" was an indicator to those in the factory that the car had been ordered by a customer through a dealer, as opposed to a dealer ordering a number of cars to have on the lot, or the corporation sending a pre-arranged shipment to the dealer under a franchise contract. It meant that a customer had been given an expected delivery date. If the car has not had a full restoration and body repaint, the word "RUSH" may also be written in grease pencil on the outside of the body tub under a fender or on the engine side of the firewall. Bob Preston Posted Saturday at 11:54 AM Report Posted Saturday at 11:54 AM Black was offered as a standard color from the beginning of production. Some time between November of 1962 and January of 1963 black was replaced by gray. Black remained available as a special order color.
paul shuffleburg Posted Saturday at 02:19 PM Author Report Posted Saturday at 02:19 PM The only colors listed in the flyer I have for the 63 is Grey, White, Turquoise, Gold, and Red.
Bob Preston Posted Saturday at 02:47 PM Report Posted Saturday at 02:47 PM The information I provided is from The Studebaker Avanti Production Data book which was compiled by the Studebaker National Museum Archives. The book contains photographs of internal documents one of which contains the information I shared. The first black Avanti was 63R-1013. The first grey Avanti was 63R-2122. There were also 32, 1964 Avanti’s painted black.

Your flyer must have been printed between the time ‘Avanti Black’ was discontinued and replaced with ‘Avanti Grey’….. and before ‘Avanti Black’ was offered again as an extra cost option. PS…. Your black Avanti is a nice ‘stable mate’ with your all black ‘51 Commander!….Ed Edited Saturday at 03:27 PM by mfg Added PS
regnalbob Posted Saturday at 05:46 PM Report Posted Saturday at 05:46 PM This is from the 1963 Avanti Order Guide.
Avanti1963! Posted Saturday at 08:01 PM Report Posted Saturday at 08:01 PM So all black carpet was available in 63 afterall? I thought only 64 had solid black. See the gold and red cars in the table.
paul shuffleburg Posted 1 hour ago Author Report Posted 1 hour ago regnalbob, Thanks for the chart. I always thought my carpet and lower door panels were SALT & PEPPER but now I know that it is Fawn & Black.
