mfg
The second cowl intake, installed on Studebaker Avantis as part of the 1964 styling changes, was added to give increased air volume to the heater/ventilator system.....True?
Gunslinger
False. It's to direct cooling air to the transmission tunnel on automatic equipped cars.
regnalbob
False. It directs more air to the driver side air vent.
mfg
The second cowl intake no doubt does deliver a bit more air to the driver's side air vent, but I'd agree with Gunslinger than its true reason for 'being' was to cool down the transmission tunnel area and floor shifter assy.....Answer....FALSE! regnalbob
The second cowl intake no doubt does deliver a bit more air to the driver's side air vent, but I'd agree with Gunslinger than its true reason for 'being' was to cool down the transmission tunnel area and floor shifter assy.....Answer....FALSE! The second cowl intake does not provide the air to cool the transmission tunnel area and the shifter. It only provides more air to the inside of the car. That area is cooled from the larger cowl intake. A console cooling kit uses tubes and hoses and directs fresh air from the cowl to the underside of the console to cool the trans tunnel and shifter. Used only on cars without air conditioning. Edited August 21, 2015 by Regnalbob
mfg
Your a bit off the mark here Bob!....What the pictures show is the console cooling kit which Studebaker offered for 'single cowl screen' (round headlight) Avantis.....It was a retrofit kit for these earlier Avantis whose owners complained of a super-hot console and shifter. Studebaker 'fixed' this issue on the '64 'square headlight' Avantis, by adding the second smaller driver's side cowl screen, and placing the tubular console air inlets (with attached hoses) directly below this new second screen! The 'second cowl screen' was definitely added to cool down the Avanti console area.
