Why was the Studebaker Avanti's hood hinged at the front...instead of at the rear, as was common practice on all other Studebaker passenger cars?

Simplicity and safety.  It was a simpler setup and if the hood released at speed it couldn’t blow up blocking the driver’s view.  Servicing was easier as well.

I would generally agree with that....

A couple of other reasons are 1) Room.....it would have been pretty difficult to fashion a latch plate over the Avanti t radiator/shroud.

2) And the designers were probably influenced by the Chevrolet Corvette-Ford Thunderbird hood opening!
