ron@crall.com Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 Did the 71 Avanti's have ignition shielding? I thought it was to keep down RF emmissions from the ignition as the fiberglass would not do so, so Vette's and Avanti both had it. The 71 I got has none. If it should, it must have been different that the 63/64 parts.
Gunslinger Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 I can't say for sure if it had shielding, but if it did, it would be Corvette style shields. You can find them on Corvette parts sites like Corvette Central, Corvette America, Zips Corvette and Ecklers. If my '70 came with shielding, it was long gone by the time I purchased the car. Starting with the RQ-B series in 1970, Avanti Motors began installing a GM Capacitive Discharge ignition with an electronic distributor, so maybe shielding wasn't required, but I think it would have been.
Charlie Kile Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 I think The later systems use carbon conductor ignition wires. So ignition noise isn't as big a problem. Charlie RQB3921
1972avantiisme Posted July 21, 2015 Report Posted July 21, 2015 My 1972 has it and it is exactly the same as a Corvette shielding.
wildfelr Posted July 21, 2015 Report Posted July 21, 2015 RQB3263....My 81/305 had a crappy shield...I removed it to no ill effect....I also changed the ign. wires to Accell silicon so that may be part of it ...RQB3263
