The metal tag stamped 45B or 45C found under a rear differential cover bolt on some Studebaker Avanti rear axles indicates .......?....... and also ........?........

The metal tag can tell us the following:

  1. That this is a Twin Traction rear axle (non-TT rear axles don't have this tag)
  2. The '45' tells us that the ramp angles of the cross pins and differential case are 45 degrees
  3. The 'B' or 'C' tells us that the rear axle has dished clutch plates & discs, and also tells us the specific clutch & disc arrangement

Probably more information than anyone wanted to know :)
