Paul K.
I have seen 1963 Studebaker Avanti VIN plates (serial number) two ways on two different cars. 63 R-XXXX and R-XXXX Is one not correct? mfg
They are both correct Paul. Studebaker dropped the '63' off of the serial number when 1964 Avanti 'square light' production began....But to tell you the truth, there's always been a conflict concerning that, as some of the fifty or so 'round light' transition models were tagged as '64's and didn't have the '63' serial prefix. Anyway, if you're looking at a '64 'square light' Studebaker Avanti, its serial should begin with 'R'....If you're looking at a '63 'round light' Studebaker Avanti, its serial should begin with '63R'. (Transition models excepted)

Paul K.
Bob and MFG, Thanks for the definitive answers. The Avanti I was looking at without the 63 in the prefix was a 3800 series serial number. It all makes sense,
