psdenno Posted January 26, 2015 Report Posted January 26, 2015 In 1963, what was the cost of a bottle of Avanti Turquoise touch up paint at your local dealer's Parts Department?
mfg Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Wow!, that's a good question. I can only hazard a guess......$1.99 ?
psdenno Posted January 27, 2015 Author Report Posted January 27, 2015 Two bits. Maybe free. Not free or 25 cents, but seemingly inexpensive by today's prices. Any other guesses?
mfg Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 How about my $1.99 guess? Did you miss it?
regnalbob Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 List price $1.00. Dealer cost $0.60.
mfg Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Thanks Bob!, Would love to see prices like that today!
psdenno Posted January 27, 2015 Author Report Posted January 27, 2015 List price $1.00. Dealer cost $0.60. Perfect answer. While a dollar may seem inexpensive today, in 1963 Federal Minimum Wage was $1.25 an hour. Factoring in inflation over the last 50 years, $1 in 1963 is equivalent to $9.69 in 2014.
Guest dapy Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 OK, if we assume that the base price of a 1963 R1 was $4500 what would that translate to today?
garyc Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Based on psdenno's info I would estimate $34,884 for the same Avanti today. An interesting figure when pricing a reconditioned Studebaker Avanti today.

You're right on the money according to the on line inflation calculator I used ( http://www.davemanuel.com/inflation-calculator.php ) $34,883.72 out the door.
Guest dapy Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 Let's say the R1 in question is a quality, recent frame off restoration, with rebuilt original engine, working A/C and was as close to factory production as possible...if for sale what would the price be? How much would you pay for it assuming you had a choice of colors...
