R3-R4 Packard?

It wouldn't be the wrist pins, because the Packards didn't have that problem....but Avanti83's 'oil pump' comment hit the nail on the head. In common with the Packard V8, the R3-R4 oil pumps had a design flaw that could also cause oiling problems.

Where do you get that idea? The R3 pumps were identical to regular Studebaker oil pumps, except the housing and gears were 1/4" longer.

In at least six cases with these engines, the pin that holds the oil pump idler gear worked loose raising havoc inside the R3-4 pumps. NOT a good thing to happen at 6000 RPM...or even at idle! Studebaker (Granatellis?) should have redesigned the housing for the longer gears...but that of course would have taken more time and $$$$$!
