Reproduction '63 Studebaker Avanti headlamp outer rings are made exactly like the originals, but now have a much higher quality (show chrome) finish.....True?

The originals were made of die-cast 'potmetal'....The gorgeous new repros are made of chrome plated brass.

I guess i got caught by the repros being better quality than the originals and never thought about what the metal underneath was

Yes, for mass production die cast 'worked', was the cheapest way out, and got the car sold!
