mfg
So what's so special about 1964 Studebaker Avanti R-5516? HINT!.....RIP!
r1lark
Is that the wrecked Avanti that Paul Johnson purchased from overseas (somewhere in the UK?), along with a crated R3 engine and other NOS parts?

Yes....that's it!....well done! Studebaker Avanti R5516 was' totaled' in a traffic accident in Ireland.....IF that accident didn't happen, the crated Paxton R3 engine, (B-92), which languished in its shipping crate for 35+ years and then spent time on display at the SNM, would have early on been installed in Avanti R5516! R5516, after being shipped back to the States, was subsequently parted out.
studegary
R5516 was one-third of the way through the factory run of R3 Avantis.

Gary, so as not to confuse people, I'll mention that R5516 WAS NOT one of the nine 'production line' R3 powered 1964 Studebaker Avantis. Had it not been wrecked, It would have received a 'crated' R3 Avanti engine. The closest 'production line' R3 powered Avanti to R5516 would be R5532! By "...one-third of the way through...", I meant that three R3 Avantis were built before this Avanti and six R3 Avantis were built after this Avanti.
