Oh, so it must be open versus closed breather caps.

Correct. The small holes around the bottom of the breathers were silver soldered shut. Sort of odd when it could still vent around the clearance between the breather tube and the breather.

  2. A friend has a 63 R2 4 speed Avanti. It’s an aggressive project but thought I’d run it by you. Missing engine and transmission. California car so solid frame. Poor interior. Needs about everything. Has clean title. If you have an interest I can get you a price or put you in touch with the owner. It is a rough car but is/ was an R2 4 speed.

  3. Dwight. I used to wonder why there were round light Avantis after 4892 but I’m pretty certain I figured it out. I believe body shells or partially fitted or partially completed Avantis were pulled from the assembly line and put into repair bays due to assembly issued or lack of certain optional parts etc. These cars languished in a repair bay until the required repair was done or part arrived. Some round light 64’s are almost all 64 ie post 4892 and some are practically all pre 4892. This tells me there was no pool of round light bodies they needed to get rid of.

  4. Kind of neat looking at the real early cars. I didn’t take the cover off the selector as I did t want to disturb or break it. I couldn’t see the letters underneath so I assumed they may have been originally painted on the back of the plastic and have faded off. The heat sounds like good reasoning to have it and the fact it’s in a parts book and one had been advertised is interesting.

I thought the two tone steering wheel is also cool. This one is broken loose at the weld joints so needs to be fixed. I’ll probably do that just to keep the originality.

  5. I have a very early Avanti serial number R1016. The wiper mechanism on the passenger side had broken out of the cowl many years ago. Looking under the dash I can see that the wiper on that side is disabled leaving the only operative wiper on the driver’s side. I intend to make this repair but want to make sure it’s right. I seem to remember a service bulletin that addressed this problem and was hoping someone here might be able to copy and post it here. I think the factory actually beefed up this area in the cowl in a similar manner that was done with the doors due to the cracking around the regulators. Anyone out there familiar with the problem, repair and proper adjustment.

  6. I agree, the two clubs need to get along better. I’m not sure who’s to blame now but thirty years ago I actually dropped out of the AOA as it was obvious that most Avanti owners were ashamed of the Studebaker heritage. The popular notion was to remove any thing on the car that said Studebaker. Someone even mentioned, in print, that all Avanti owners should be on the look out for Super Larks and Hawks to strip the disc brake components off those cars for their Avantis. I’m a Stude guy and that just rubbed me the wrong way. That being said, I would imagine the crazy price of gas, hotel rooms when traveling and food was the biggest reason for the lack of attendance.

  7. The original Studebaker just used the clips that are hidden. Avanti II may have used a finishing screw at each side to hold up the ends. At least the Avanti IIs I had did it that way. There is a front and back to the pad so make sure it’s correct for the fit, especially the end fit.

  8. I won’t argue with orange being the correct color for the bulk of the Avanti run but don’t deny black blowers found their way into the mix somehow either. As someone said, orange stands out and I’m sure Studebaker wanted to see that. I did hear, way back in the olden days, that the service superchargers were black. Possibly final inspection replaced potentially bad blowers with service units in South Bend. As for late production cars having black blowers maybe instead of getting new units from Paxton they opted to use the service inventory as another needed cost saving tool. To throw another color out there I believe R3 blowers were red along with everything else on the engine like surge tank, crankcase vent tube, bell housing and even the transmission. I think the rear brake drums were even painted red.
