Check out the pictures in post #29 of this topic. There may be more on Bob Johnstone's website where I found this one.

Those photos answer a lot of questions, thanks for the tip. I also have a 64 Avanti with thin back buckets and would like to convert that one to the thick back style just because I like the looks a little better. I assume the horse shoe looking fiberglass panel in the prior mentioned article is all I need to make the conversion? Anyone know where those additional panels might be purchased?

Nels,is that the 288 cam? The R3s I've had a hand in were quite streetable. They had the milder 276 cam.

Brad. I know it’s not a 276 cam and it sounds too radical even for the 288. I know Paxton was having the early experimental cams and the final ones designed at the same shop that was doing there Novi work. Normally I’d remember the name of the shop but my brain isn’t what is used to be. I’ll probably remember it as soon as I post this…or probably not.

  3. After several years, I finally noticed this discussion of my R3 Lark. I was also wondering how in the world Studebaker could sell a car that acted as bad as this one does when it’s cold? It would, however, smooth out when the engine warmed up. I was relieved to find out that this engine would not have acted this way in 1964 as the proper fuel was available at that time. Shortly after this video and with an empty gas tank , I put five gallons of 100 octane aviation fuel in the tank. The difference on the engines attitude was unbelievable. It will now start easily when dead cold or even after a lengthy winter storage. It idles smooth and acts like a regular car.

  4. The paint problem was the use of modern paint over the sealer coat. There was a time limitation not to be exceeded prior to application of finish paint. I think anything that was sealed without being finish coated within 48 hours had to be scuffed or lightly sanded before application of the finish color. My wife bought a new 85 Mustang and after driving it for two or three days we brought it to the car wash. The paint literally blew off the car in sheets. The problem was universal with the product used. A simple mistake caused the company, Avanti Motors, to go belly up.

  5. I’m looking for turquoise vinyl or seat skins. Also, I bought a late 63 that came with the orange/tangerine interior. The problem being the prior owner dyed the entire interior black. I would consider good used door panels and seat skins for it. Maybe even for the turquoise car. Let me know what you have. I may need a 63 white steering wheel also.

Is carpet in orange or turquoise with the black speckles available in reproduction?

What looks slick may or may not be slick. For example, the 1975-80 Chevy/Olds/Pontiac/Opel Monza, an ugly little pumpkinseed of a car, is much more aerodynamic than the '53 Studebaker or '63 Avanti.

Don’t know how you can make this judgement call when we don’t have the drag coefficient numbers for the 53 Studebaker or the Avanti? No offense and you maybe correct but this statement is your assumption not based on comparing facts.😊

Yes, now I remember....he evaluated an R2 '63 Daytona along with two other cars on a segment of one of his TV shows along with Donald Osborne.

I think he also mentioned wanting a Super Lark when he toured the Studebaker National Museum.

  9. For what it’s worth I always had problems using old F style fluid. On trips to South Bend from Cincinnati I would check the blower fluid after the first 150 miles. When using type F fluid I was not able to pull the dipstick out of the blower without the use of a multiple layer rag….it was just way too hot. I changed to Mobile synthetic trans fluid and could check the fluid at any time with my bare fingers pulling out the dip stick. I’ve had pretty close to no problems for the last twenty years.
