  1. Thanks Zedman. I put the pirate buckles on the sides also, but just left them black. This car has has a lot of changes over its life. Gone is the moonroof, the rear luggage rack, and Johnstone’s Avanti registry has a photo of the engine with a blower installed. One of the former owners, Mike Valent, used to post on this forum but it seems he has passed and I haven’t been able to track down any solid history and there doesn’t seem to be any original paperwork to be found. Seems like so many of our cars have a story after so many years. Mike

  2. If you have the ornament, cut a cardboard side out of your Cheerio box. Carefully push the four pins through the cardboard. Now that your ornament is flush with the cardboard, trace around it and cut it so the cardboard matches the ornament. Now you can lay the cardboard on the hood, measure back the right distance, and mark the four poked holes with a felt pen through the cardboard.

    Pushnuts work. Mike

  3. I bought the NOS metal pieces from Nostalgic and had them chromed in Spokane. I think you can buy repops from some sites. I also did the pirate buckles but left them black. I’ve seen the “S” and plain black emblems for sale, I just had this idea to do something a little different and I got lucky with the result. Mike

  4. I thought I would like to have the emblem on my 83 but didn’t think the “S” would be the right fit. I bought the NOS raw metal piece from Nostalgic and had it chromed. I made a silicone mold from an original “S” emblem. An engraving shop cut out and engraved the black base, and I put it in the mold and poured the hobby shop clear goop over it. It took several tries to get one free of bubbles but I finally got one that turned out pretty good.  Thought it would be a way to pay tribute to Mr.  Loewry.   Mike

  5. It would be nice if you could connect another temp gauge to make sure yours is accurate. Suppose it wasn’t and your engine temp was right but your heater core is restricted. Have you ever flushed your cooling system and back flushed the heater core?  Just a thought.   Mike

  6. I have 3771 and to avoid the extreme mental anguish of the exact number I’ve just been saying that there were just over 200 made in 83. I spend more time explaining that it wasn’t built in Canada and it isn’t a replica kit car!  Mike

  7. Very interesting thread even though I don’t drive my car over 100 mph.  I am, however, amazed that I can drive the Avanti down the road at 45 mph  with the windows down without my wife complaining about her hair getting mussed.  The buffeting in our Grand Cherokee at the speed will about rupture an eardrum!  Mike

  8. Any opinions or experience on running an Avanti through a car wash with high pressure undercarriage spray?  Wondering if it would help to keep the frame and hog troughs clean and shiny or if water will pool up and dissolve the undercarriage like a fizzie. Seems like it might help clean up some of the oil drips.  Mike

  9. I can’t speak for the Avanti shifter but I replaced the stock shifter in my 64 Daytona R1 with a Hurst and it was a big improvement. That was back in 1973.  If one of you could come up with a time machine we could go back and load up on a lot of fabulous cars and parts that we can only read about now. Let us know how the progress is going.  Mike
